Can anyone understand my logic ?At present I`m paying for a Jaguar warranty, servicing, road tax, insurance, servicing etc for this car and not covering 3k miles a year.I bought this Jaguar as a demo model for £30k (list £36k) in early 06, I`ve only ever used it as a weekend car and done less than 18k miles.I`ve used the car 3 times since its annual £500+ service and mot at the main(supplying) dealer in December. The thing is I feel although they have got their own cars, a 7 seater MPV would make more sense so the rest of my family could use it but the Toyota dealer I went to offered less than £11k for the car.Any thoughts or comments good or bad appreciated.

the offer is looking in the right ballpark without knowing the exact reg year and mileage of your car
    :D
  • The dealer will probably just put it in an auction to get shut. Which is what you should do if you want shut quickly, otherwise sell it privately.

A toyota dealer wont do anything with your car other than trade it on - hence the bad price.

You've already taken the bulk of the depreciation losses on your car, so it would seem foolish to sell it at a time when the depreciation is starting to level out - and all so that your relatives / offspring can abuse your new purchase.

Well its the depreciation (apart from being a lovely car) thats made me hold on to the Jaguar as long, hopefully the `abused`replacement would be changed after 3 yrs regardless :)

that car has been costing you about or even over £2 a mile, and the same will happen if you keep trading up to a more expensive one

do you actually need a car at all?

I've done 140,000 miles in 6 and a bit years, and I've spent less than you have, starting from a 4 year old 24,000 mile car for £4500

I`ve asked myself that many times and the thing is I`ve also got a Ford Ranger which is due in next week for its first mot and annual service (done less than 3k since last one) :rotfl:

Does the Jag give you pleasure, if it does then keep it and look after it particularly keeping the underbody washed down after the winter's over.

Keep it for years to get the benefit from the huge depreciation curve which is now just levelling out is my suggestion, unless someone is prepared to give you a decent figure for it, very rare to find cars like yours at such low mileage.

The only thing i would suggest is to find a good Jag specialist indy maybe via a Jaguar forum to cut your excessive servicing costs, so long as someone competent is servicing it the value will not be affected.

If i needed a replacement i'd be PMing your sharpish.

MPV's and others using them....not the same situation as yours but a friend of mine used to get a choice of company car and he'd always choose a large MPV for use in their many holidays and he preferred the comfortable roomy relaxed drive too...colleagues were always trying to borrow it as the sporty saloons they picked for looks were useless for going away, whilst he would get to use the sporty tin can they chose...his reply aways ended in 'off''.

Good man. For some reason, Jags are going for far less than they're worth (when measured against what you could buy for the money you'd get for a used Jag). Don't know if people are scared by servicing costs, but shop around and they're not too bad. In the case of the diesel it can't be an economy issue...that 2.7 is an absolute cracker. Makes sense to keep hold and enjoy the luxury.

However you're paying way too much for your servicing, even at a Jag main dealer. I just had a major service done and it was <£400, minor ones come in at about £250. (S-Type R rather than diesel, but you'd have thought they'd be more expensive...)
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

I have to question the logic in having a car you do only a few thousand in a year. Sounds like you'd have been better off with a 3.0 petrol in the first place as you won't ever recover the extra costs of a diesel with that mileage and the petrol is more refined.
