Think the point is it's not a situation of "should I buy a car", but "should I sell it". E.g. my S-Type R's only used for c5000 miles a year nowadays. Practically could I manage without it? Yes. However the whole point of being savvy with money is to have some spare to enjoy life with. Do I really enjoy the buzz I get out of driving a luxury car? Yes. If I didn't have one, would I go out and buy one today? Possibly. Now I have got one would I let it go? No.

For the OP, yes if buying a car today would a petrol make more sense than a diesel? Possibly...the petrol's go for even less. However is it worth selling a diesel (properly serviced, know what you're dealing with) and going through the transaction costs to buy a cheaper petrol (can never really be sure how well it's been looked after)? Very doubtful.

I'd quibble a little on the refinement issue. I've driven a few 2.7s, and used to have a 3.0. I would describe them as having different characteristics, rather than the 3.0 being more refined. The 2.7 is a cracker of an engine, only really surpassed by the higher performance ones they've subsequently introduced.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...
