I too am in the same boat regarding moving into a new flat. Is it cost-effective to avoid installing a BT line and to opt for the Virgin Media cable service or would it be better to purchase a complete phone/broadband package with someone like O2?

You can't get a line installed by O2 at present.
Best ADSL broadband package totally depends what is available LLU on your exchange.

Ah yes, I read above that O2 will not be supplying lines directly until May. I am just debating over the initial outlay of purchasing and activating a BT phone line as well as entering a broadband contract.

I assume you can purchase phone deals as part of Virgin Media's services?

No, there's no indication that 02 will supply line installs or reconnections even once they commence home phone services.
O2 home phone will only be available to existing broadband customers or customers taking a broadband/calls/line rental bundle. The bulk of their home phone customers will be existing broadband customers who already have a working BT line.
Yes, VM offer phone services, but this does not give you an ADSL line-the phone service comes via cable (assuming you are in a VM cable area).
