I have just been speaking to Southern Electric about this Go Direct 3 account. I have been with them for a few years, mainly because I think their customer service is very good and you can always contact them quite easily on an 0800 number.

On looking at their prices today, I noticed that they have just about doubled the daily standing charge on gas to 26.85p per day:eek: I was told this is because they have to catch up with the other main suppliers who charge about 30p per day?

The Go Direct 3 prices are definitely much better than we are currently paying on Standard Energy Online (with standing daily charge), but I would really like to hear from anyone who has switched. It seems you are tied in for 12 months with a £50 fee if you leave earlier. However, to change to this plan, I have to set up completely new gas and electricity accounts and a new direct debit instruction - WHY?

When I switched from Ebico to Southern it all stayed the same and I could still view all of my old bills online, but apparently this would be treated as a completely new account.

Gas:
Currently paying 2.70 for all units plus 25.57 daily standing charge.
Go Direct 3 would be 3.84 for the first 1143 and then 2.25 thereafter.

Electricity:
Currently paying 11.29 for electricity plus 10.96 per day standing charge.
Go Direct 3 would be 12.68 for first 225 and then 9.27 thereafter.

Comparison site says I could save nearly £300 per year switching.

Any advice gratefully received - are you still out there Cardew?you are very knowledgeable about these things:T

With the gas, your current price is 3.84p for the first 1143 units over 90 days. 1143 divided by 90 = 12.7 units per day, multiplied by 3.84p each = 48p 'tier 1' / equivalent to a standing charge with everything else at 2.25p (tier 2). The tier 1 seems reasonable. Same with the electricity. Have you got your yearly kWh figures as then I can work the difference in bills out for you?

The unit prices are cheaper with Go Direct 3. The standing charges are cheaper with Go Direct 3. The comparison site suggested you could save £250 on top of the leaving penalty. What's the problem? Is it really going to cost you £250 of damages in hassle and irritation receiving new accounts and debit instructions?

    Thanks for that!

Our yearly kWh usage sounds horrendous - about 34,000 - but we only have gas for heating and it is only on for about 6.5 hours per day during winter.

I hear what you are saying Kim, but it just seems strange to me that I can't just switch over to the other plan and the fact that I have to set up a completely new DD. Of course I will undoubtedly do this to save some money.

The OP seemed to have a similar dilemma with changing ISP's I recall.

    Hi guccigoo,

The honest answer is I really don't know. Have just had another look on their site and it says that if you pay by direct debit you can save a further 5%, which implies that you can go on it and not pay by direct debit. It does say that it is a dual fuel deal, but then you already get both from them.

Why don't you phone them, they could give you a definite answer.

Standard energy online is an internet only based plan where you don't get sent paper bills.

Hi all you southern people. My daughter in on Go Tariff 2. I have just compared her bill to my eon bill and her electric is expensive in comparison. And my eon deal is an outdated one. What are the options with southern, and what is the get out cost of Go2. Any info appreciated.
