If you're planning on buying now, or in a week or two is a good time. The prices drops are coming into effect.
For example an AMD Athlon64 4200+ (Dual Core) is around £130. An AMD Athlon64 3500+ is £60, about a month ago it was nearer £150.
Or you may want to wait for the Intel Core's to become available as they are better in virtually every respect to the Athlon64's. From the look of things though, you'll be lucky if you get one before September so it may be quite a wait.
Any thoughts? I'm thinking of waiting a week or so longer, then may upgrade to a dual core AMD (socket 940).

I bene waiting to get a new rig for months and have been waiting for the a AMD but a few weeks back I decided to go for a Crusoe however I see the mobo have to be a new revision to take them and they seem to have no ide only sata, whislt that is fine its sata dvd drives that are hard get
I may still get a AMD for our server as prices are dropping and can get a barebones system for less than £2000 -
some mental benchmarks HERE
don't know about anyone else, but I'm kicking my own opteron rig and getting me some Core Duo loving as soon as
they are awesome in every respect, and pre-order price is lower than Athlon X2 equivalent!"If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0 -
Yeah I'd like a Core myself, although I can't see them being available for a while. They certainly look and sound amazing though.
I'd probably go for an E6400, but am waiting to see some benchmark results for it. I think an Athlon64 4600+/4800+ should roughly compete with an E6400, so am going to see what the prices are like, and weigh up the pro's ad con's.
To be honest though, I may wait it out and switch back to Intel. Shame as I've been very happy with AMD. The new Intel Core's are just too good."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

forget about 4600+, bite your lip and stick it out for the Core
If you're into OC'ing at all, read this, absolutely incredible.
Intel have totally nailed it this time, just a shame AMD have a hold of my beloved ATi now lol"If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0 -
TBH I'm hoping the Pentium 805 comes down in price even more after the launch of Conroe, it would do to replace my aging P4 Williamette 2.0Ghz0
