Chopping conifer down

I have a very large conifer tree which I would like to remove.
One guy has suggested that he will chop the tree down and the 'grind the stump' and he's said the roots will die.

Is this the best way? I would like to remove the stump and make sure the roots die.

Thanks

I have seen stump grinders mentioned on many posts previously. thought the object was though to pull out the stump so maybe clarify that with him?

Don't forget large conifers can have pretty big roots and may have drained the local soil of much water and as such can be an issue if removing large stumps and roots espcially if fences are nearby

Stump grinders are the usual method of completely removing a tree when there are no excavators etc to grub the roots out. You will need to have complete access with no steps to get the machine in.

Be warned you can get ground heave if removing a large tree which has been taking in a lot of water from your garden. Get your guy to look into his if it is close to an adjacent structure
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!

the MSE method is to dig a big enough hole around the stump, and just saw it off,
below the level of the ground.
hard work, but virtually cost free.

  • We have an arborist coming to take down a willow tree in our front garden in the next week or so, he said he will cut the stump down to about an ince above the ground then poison it so it doesnt grow back. No mention of stump grinders, but Im happy with his suggestion.

I cut down top half with a saw then some of the large branches and the up to stump.

I got some stuff you put on stump to kill the roots got it from B&Q

If you can get access to it with a vehicle, cut the tree down to a reasonable size stump, tie some rope around the stump, attach to car and drag it out.

  • Thanks peeps. This conifer is causing damage to my house. Roots had even entered the hall and had raised the asphalt flooring. I appreciate ground heave but surely the roots won't die instantly??

Someone else mentioned shortening the tree to stop damage but I would rather get rid completely and let insurance deal with the fallout. What do you guys think?
  • Get him to dig the stump out.
