Help - laptop runs like a pig.

Options
Upgraded to 1G memory. (was 512Mg )
Already run ccleaner and Adaware.

It takes ages to boot up.
Short of formatting disk and reloading windows - anyone got any ideas.

Thanks in advance

could be too many programs loading on start

    start
    run
type into the box "msconfig" without the quotes!
use the sixth tab on the top on the right hand side "startup"

have a look at the programs which are loading and untick any you don't need or recognise then give it a reboot

you could unselect all and see what it boot up like then

    Is it just the bootup?
    If so try running bootvis:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=664
  • Certainly -it's a lot faster without all the programs ticked in MSCONFIG - but I really don't know if I need them all or not.

Also - BOOTVIS has come out with some nice charts - but I really don't know what to do with them - sorry

    Any other ideas.

    Thanks again

msconfig shows exteraneous and possibly superflous programs being loaded at start

removing them from startup will not remove them from your machine,
it is almost like getting a nipper out of bed in the morning!.

msconfig shows how many clothes it is putting on before it does anything,

It sounds like your nipper is putting on a couple of coats, three pairs of toursers, two hats and a scarf before eating breakfast!!

a registry cleaner may be what you need

    http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

download regcleaner and run it, click on startup and highlight the program in doubt and click on remove programs in the bottom right

In the bootvis menu chose Trace->Optimize system

It should then reboot and recalibrate your start-up e.g. by laying out startup files so they are contiguous on disk.

Combined with removing some of the unnecessary startup progs either via MSCONFIG or winpatrol (free prog.) like I use, it should speed up startup a lot.

    List what you've unticked..

Bootvis tells you the relative time each service takes up in the boot process, so if you have one thing with a big bar, that is will be slowing the process down. How long does a boot take with and without the msconfig items ticked?

Have you upto data av software on the PC?

A defrag of c: may help a bit if you have been deleting a lot of stuff recently.

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
