Only a month! But i've had broadband from them for 3 years, i upgraded recently to the faster speed as the email they sent said it was totally free... not realising it included a new 12 month contract! When i renewed my orange phone last week they told me i could get free broadbrand through themselves, hence my reason to want to cancel BT.0

hmm it may be too late but if you still have the email and it doesn't mention the 12 month contract then you can argue your case. I've got a feeling that the contract will be mentioned in the small print though

I had a similar problem with bt but it was all done by phone and i was told by an operative that there was definately not an extra 12 month contract, next thing i got was a letter thanking me for taking out a new 12 month contract !!!
I soon got that sorted but it was before the upgrade was done and, of course, they went and listened to their recorded phone conversations.
Good luck

Contract is mentioned in the small print. No chance of getting out of contract just because you can get a cheaper deal.Comping wins this month: 2 x business class flights anywhere we like | Horse vitamins (!) | New kettle | Motorcycling prints | Signed LPs | Thanks to all!0

I also regraded, as they call it, to faster speed. But after 2 months I cancelled and got out of the new contract. Here's how (try and adapt thisfor your own situation and hope for the best):
I never got substantially faster speeds. After about three weeks of calls to their useless indian call centres and being shunted about between tech 'help' and billing, I simply insisted (when talking to a UK billing / order management call centre where they can make decisions without constantly checking with someone) that I had never recived the faster speed at all, and thus wanted to cancel the order, going back to my old BT Yahoo status. They reluctantly admitted that for cusomers who they can't give the faster service to successfully, they can cancel,a nd they let me.
Am now mid changeover to be* who have sadly stopped their referral scheme, but who still offer a very good service.
Good luck. hope this helps.0
