Mobile - TV Remote Control

I have read that, with some mobiles, it's possible to download software which enables the mobile to be used as a TV Remote. Sounds a bit like an (early) April Fool's gag. Anyone know anything about it?

It can only be done with phones that have infra red but not seen it in operation.
My DD's partner controls the lights in their house from his mobile ..so if they are late back or out all night he can turn them on and switch them off from wherever they are.

you can use an iphone, slingbox, and slingplayer app for controlling your tv and sky+

I'd imagine it's on phones you can dload apps for, but not sure how it would work if the phone doesnt have infrared.

Can't you just use the TV remote?

Try apps for the iPhone or ipod Touch. I've downloaded an app to turn my iPod Touch into a mouse. This enables you operate your pc/Mac via your wireless modem/router.
