British Gas Homecare Annual Service

Hi

I am just wondered for the Homecare Plan that came with a free Annual Boiler Service, do i need to phone them to have it done or they will arrange it or the service date is the same as the previous year?

  • They will send you a letter if there is engineers available however after the winter we have had It would do no harm to phone them and book it as they have a backlog of services due to the adverse weather..

  • Hi. British Gas do not want to do your annual service as it costs them money. Add to this they do not have enough engineers on the ground, this is why they are actively contracting to small companies asking them to wear British Gas uniform.. From experience if you do not call them they will not call you, if they add a month onto your annual service interval at year 10 they will only have conducted 9 services. Also if they dont conduct an annual service and your boiler breaks down they have an opotunity to void your contract. British Gas realises that annual services are an expence if tied into a repair contract so they activley promote a sales initive aimed at increased wage to the engineer if he can gain a sale.. I am not a big fan of British Gas they take advantage of people. Bottom line is phone them to book an appointment, please understand this service has been paid for, you paid for it so dont be kidded into tinking you have a free service... NOTHING TO DO WITH BRITISH GAS IS FREE......................`

My mum had hers serviced today, British Gas took the full amount Dec 09 by direct debit and it's only becaused she rang them that she's got it serviced, don't wait for them to contact you because they don't.
  • british gas do not service. They do safety checks, major difference. sticking a flue anyliser into the flue and saying everything is ok is well short of a service in the boilers instruction book.

BG systems normaly sends out up to 3 postcards advising you to contact them when the service is due and also have a department calling people to book one in. As for the other prev poster. BG cant 'void' your contract due to service not being done as its BG that offer the service although the service is not 'free' as you pay for it within your contract. BG dont tell anyone to pretend that they work for them either.

P.S. You can now get the breakdown cover without a service.

    Crap. Spam ....

your username gives away a indication you work for a company that clearly does not like BG. Your statement is very inaccurate it is almost laughable.

NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY GAS ENGINEER IS FREE.

Totally agree. The BG contract has changed. They've added one word. It's no longer an annual service it's an annual service INSPECTION. They check it with a combustion analyser and if the figures are OK they walk away.
This doesn't check case seals, for leaks, rusty cases, ect, etc. Neither does it clean out all that dirt which attracts moisture when your boiler is turned off, quickening the demise of your boiler.

Just that BG are twice the price. I love it when customers tell me they've had a quote from BG for a new boiler. It means they get a better boiler, a better install, at half the price and I still make a good HONEST profit.

nothing in this world is for free so make sure your not robbed blind.

And yes i'm no fan of BG........ or !!!!!! Turpin for that matter.

Firstly I now don't have the BG Homecare cover as it has simply become too expensive; but I did have their cover on both CH systems for many years.

    HOWEVER

I cannot speak for the latest condensing boilers, but I have two boilers here(one a combi) and the full manufacturer's servicing schedules for both boilers(an Ideal and a Worcester)

For both boilers the full servicing does not consist of a single adjustment(with the exception of checking size of pilot flame). It consists purely of cleaning and visual checks. I have watched various BG fitters do this many times, and they follow the full servicing instructions to the letter.

BG are responsible for the correct operation of the boiler and if anything goes wrong they have to fix it under the terms of the Homecare agreement. So it is not in their interests to fail to follow the full instructions.

I think there is simply a lot of misinformation put out by people who dislike BG(perfectly understandable!) or firms like above with a vested interest in slamming BG.

As stated previously - I don't like the current ethos of BG maintenance division as it seems that the 'profit at all costs' mentality has taken over the company.

Perhaps the detractors(e.g pegasusheating) can point out what steps from the manufacturer's servicing schedules BG omit from their servicing. - be specific and affected owner can raise the issue with BG.

Correct BG Make around 5 - 10% from a homecare 200 in a year per customer assuming the customer has 1 service and 1 breakdown a year. Any more than that raises operating costs

The GMB ( Union of BG Engineers ) are planning strike action due to
"Bullying" Sales from the engineers. I for one do not believe an engineers job is the hard sell so lets see what comes of this ballot.
