Sky Protect - is it worth it?

I've had several calls from Sky saying that now my one year warranty on my sky+ box is almost up, I should be thinking of taking out a 'Sky Protect plan'. For just over £8 a month it covers your box against accidental damage, etc. What do people think about this plan? Is it worth it? If I wanted to just buy a new sky+ box from sky how much would they charge? I can't seem to find this information anywhere. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks :)

Most Sky stb repairs would come in well under that years subs.

Even skys charge for a callout is £65, which I believe will cover a replacement refurb box.

Never seen a appliance warranty/insurance package that makes any financial sense.

Thank you for your reply. Yeah, they don't seem to be very clear on what happens if you don't buy it. Even when I asked on the phone they don't give a clear answer. Thanks again :)

No. No. No. A thousand times no. A proper repair costs just over £40 and will last you years. See the sticky at the top of the page about repairs.

Agree with will on this.90% of the time, the reco replacement box is older than your original box! (I've been given old phase 1 Pace boxes to use on service calls)
I've been with Sky since day 1 (apart from the last year while unemployed) & have only once had a service call for a !!!!!!ed Thompson Sky+ (which I did'nt pay for .... staff perk!lol)
As for my physical set up,cabling ect,it'll never fail for one reason...I did it myself!:p
  • As said earlier, extended warranties are not really worth getting purely because you can get your Sky box repaired/replaced for free by Sky themselves if you've passed your minimum contract term. Our very first sky box failed in Feburary, which was used as a multi-room box. I wasn't prepared to pay the engineer callout fee of £65, so I decided to just cancel the lot! Well I actually wanted to cancel just the multi-room but it had more leverage during negotiations.
Anyway, I ended up speaking to someone in cancellations who offered a free callout to sort out the box to keep my existing custom. If any of my boxes fail in the future, the same call will be made as I'm out of contract and without a working Sky box its pointless having the TV subscription.

    Good luck.

    Good luck.

Unfortunately, $ky do not repair boxes. Nor are standard or $ky+ boxes manufactured any more. This means that any promise of a repair is bogus and any promise of a replacement means that you will get a box which another customer has rejected.

If you have owned your box from new, have looked after it, cleaned and dusted it, stopped it from becoming scratched, kept it in a smoke-free home and have unwatched recordings (on $ky+) you can either take your chances with $ky or pay £40-£45 for a one-off repair. Once the cheap components are replaced the digibox will give literally years of service with no problems...even the infamous Grundig/Thomson models!!
