Selling my car with a private number plate on it?

Hi I have my car up for sale and I have a personalised registration on it. Do I need to get the reg transferred and wait for the new V5 to come through before I can sell it?

I haven't took the reg off yet and someone wants to view it tomorrow so bit worried now? If they want to buy it could I transfer the reg and put it into the new owners name at the same time and then the new V5 would go straight to the new owner?

But then what if they changed their mind?

Bit confused?

If you wiat till someone buys it then you have to trust that they will transfer the number to you !!!
When you sell the car you sell on the number as well, there is no automtic right to keep it.
Best to get it put on retention (unless you already have a vehicle to put it on)

So it's best to get it put on retention and wait for the new V5 to come through - how annoying they can take up to 4 weeks can't they. Will have to tell the buyer it's not for sale yet :-(

Yes, I lost my wifes private plate this way. The guy was desperate to drive it away, paid and went 'promising' to transfer the plate. He didnt, I lost out...... And as h was a PCSO I complained to him and, eventually, his superiors and they all told me to !!!!!! off.

If you go to a local DVLA office, I am sure you can get it done quicker. May be worth looking in too.

Thats the way I always do it by doing to dvla in worcester they give you the green slip with the new reg printed on it and the tax disc but you have to wait for the new V5 to come in the post and it can take 4 weeks. I can't sell it with just the green slip can I? and if I did and then transferred it into the new owners name when the logbook arrives he may get caught speeding during that time and the fine would come to me. looks like i'll have to let the buyer down gutted

Would recommend taking the plate off and putting it on retention pronto. Costs an extra £25 than moving straight onto another car, but at least you can shift your existing car.

Looks like you have gone about things the wrong way around, as others have said, sort the plate out, then sell the car, otherwise it gets very complicated.

Does the same apply if you are part ex-ing your car at a dealer?

I'm thinking of part-ex-ing my car for the newer model and had thought the dealer would sort out the transfer of number plate. Or is it not that simple?
