New vacuum cleaner - any advice appreciated!

Our Electrolux cylinder hoover has packed up - it does work but the on switch won't stay in the 'on' position so it only works if you keep your foot on it, which is not easy. We've tried taping it down but it's getting harder and harder to keep it down. The time has come for a new one even though this is only 2-3 years old :-(

Our last (cheapest currys had) cylinder hoover lasted a lot longer at half the price but eventually had exactly the same problem.

So, after a period with no freelance work coming in and hence little spare cash, can anyone recommend a cheap cylinder hoover that might last us? Whether it's a brand recommendation or a good offer somewhere. All advice appreciated!

Mods please move is this is posted in the wrong place.

Thanks so much!

I bought a hoover from Littlewoods direct because they had a £30 off first purchase offer. Not that cheap usually. But they do a huge range and there are lots of customer reviews which are worth looking at before you decide on one model wherever you buy it. Argos & Tesco direct are worth price checking, or the shop bots.

Can you bodge the switch so that it is always on and won't turn off, rather than always off? Probably just need to "hot wire" it, then it'll be on as long as it's plugged in!
  • Why not replace the switch? Simple job for the average DIYer. Google the machine for the relevant switch.

I go for the Henry every time - I say that, but I've only bought one and it's lasted for years. Really good suction, but doesn't knacker your carpets! You should be able to pick one up for about £60-70. Good luck

Thanks all! I don't know any DIYers who could help out with the switch (certainly not the OH!) I've just seen s.o. on eBay near me who reconditions old Dysons, which I'm tempted by. Any good/bad experiences with them?

Thanks again for the input, much appreciated!

  • The Hoover Nano Light upright may be a good option for you. It's rated 4.5 of 5 stars by over 300 users (see best-vacuum.net), which is in the top 25% of all vacuum cleaners, and costs less than US $100 at Amazon.com.

The Hoover Whisper Cyclonic is another good option, it's also an upright bagless and is rated 4.5 of 5 stars by over 400 users. Costs about US $100 at Amazon.

Agree with Nikki - I've had a variety of vacuums including a dyson (rubbish suction), bissell (too fiddly), a ROOMBA (brilliant but not on carpet) and I have to say my Henry beats them all hands down. They're almost indestructable and I've hoovered up brick rubble + dust and it's still going strong.

Only thing you have to remember is that you must buy bags for them (Ebay is cheap).

I think B&Q have them cheapest at moment (TODAY - 13th March) as they have 20% off everything this weekend.
    Tesco is my second home

  • I 'third' the Henry.. I dont know about the new ones needing bags, but the older models didn't. `Fab hoover, should outlast you I think lol.. mines about 15 years old now and still perfect

I have a Roomba, great for keeping the place looking ok with zero effort but doesn't have a large waste area or deep suck, a Miele cylinder which has expensive bags but has worked for years and will probably never die, and a Morphy Richards pet Storm upright which has a super suck. We bought that when loads of new carpet went in which was going to shed for a week or two. The upright is heavy to lift but better for my back when hoovering than using the cylinder.
