in my experience buying in cash from a car dealership (main dealer) is usually not in their best interest, they want people to buy on finance, so they make even more money. Dont think you can beat looking on autotrader and buying private just make sure its got a full year of MOT. From past experience you can tell straight away when you meet the seller if there is anything dodgy going on or they are trying to hide something. I bought a MINI cooper last year and a car with the same spec, mileage etc from MINI was nearly 1k more than the advertised price on autotrader and i offered him 400 under his asking price and he accepted, I then got a years warranty for 220 and saved 1180 overall. Both had full years MOT full dealer service history and i even got 4 months tax with the car I got. O and also its worthwhile using one of the services that will HPI check it aswell so you get no nasty suprises.

    good luck
  • you do have to be careful buying private though - most people who are selling their car do so as they know something is wrong with it or will go wrong with it soon.

Exactly doesn't mean there's anything wrong but "buyer beware". Best deal for the seller to go private, the trade in price allways gives the dealers a premium to cover any problem issues, often there aren't any ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

At least 80% of the cars we take in PX has something wrong. Sometimes its major or just a lot of minor things.

Absolutely agree, people dont say "what a great reliable car, I really must ger rid of it!"
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

Oh but they do, there are people, lots of them, who habitually get rid of their cars at say 2 years old or whatever, simply because they do not want to be seen driving on older car, keeping up with the Jones's or similar.

At a guess these cars usually go to a main agent as the customer will be buying new/nearly new.

Can be a good source for an off brand relatively new car, or the auction where they dispose of them.

For my own part I get rid of cars for 2 reasons. When I get fed up of driving a particular car, some get boring, or if a change of purpose arises, ie, the need for an estate against a sports model.

I have actually never had an unreliable car but I would conceed that would be a 3rd reason, but the point is many are fine, maybe Harveydavey is seen as a soft touch ;);)

I agree with this - my current car was a week away from 3 years old when I bought it and was traded in against a brand new car at a main agent.

I did trade in a dog though :o

    hi
nobody mentioned e bay? yet, private sellers, i have 2 cars sat on my drive both from e bay both 06 plates, both private sales, latest bought yesterday 06 clio 21 K £3300, you find any priced less and i will buy them all,BUT and a big BUT, i have waited/been watching for month now,i had previous checked hpi( does not cost me anything) on 8 vehicles 6 had been a previous total loss! i went and inspected before i bought, and one which is acually on sale now, for £ 3795 , i e mailed the guy as it had outstanding finace and the response, and i quote "Thanks for your interest.Of course you can see the car but I won't be available till Thursday. You can see the vehicle any time on Thursday or Friday. I need 3795 in order to pay off the finance company after that vehicle is yours. There are other people who are interested to the vehicle."
After i had finished laughing i e mail back "no thanks",
a little common sense and home work will serve you well and can save you a lot of money which this site is all about.;)
If i dont do it someone else will!

I got my car from eBay.

£1390, including the wheels and stereo that I sold for £250+ (The replacements cost just over £100).

I have been offered £1800 for it now, a year older with another 20k on the clock.
