The downside of this is that the dog may not have a collar or be chipped so he wouldn`t be taken back to his owner. The dog wardens in our area will not take them back to the owner even if they are in the same street that the dog was found. The owners don`t sound like the sort of people who would pay the dog warden fees to get their dog back, in fact they don`t sound nice at all.

Its a better outcome than the dog left to wander the area and die slowly by the side of the road after being hit by a car and the driver not stopping.

I know where you`re coming from and if it was near a busy road then i`d probably ask someone in a position of authority to have a word, i`m really going on what the OP said about traffic in that area not being an issue.

I hate to see animals being neglected. Hopefully we shall get an update and the dog will be sat in the OP`s house all fed and warm with some new friends :D well we can live in hope :D

Hi All. Thanks for all the helpful advice.

I got hime from uni today and noticed a huge poop in the back garnen- certainly not my dogs! I realised he must have been back. He then turned up about half an hour later, hanging around the front of the house (the back garden isn't too secure, he can just walk round). One of the neighbours had spotted him roaming around all day and was in the process of phoning the dog warden.

I felt really bad after yesterday, so I went out to see him. He is very tame and lovely and I feel rather silly for being scared. I tried to give him some biscuits and water but he wasn't interested. He is just looking for my dog. I'm a bit worried about introducing them though as my dog is a bit weird with others and I thought it would be silly to risk a fight for no reason. We played with him for a while and he eventually wandered off- no sign of warden.

My housemate was tempted to keep him, as am I! Just not practical for me really though. Will maybe try and introduce my dog to him if he comes back as I doubt anything too bad would happen really and he seems lonely.

Aw, well done you for making a friend, i agree he sounds lonely.

It`s probably the most attention that he`s had for a while.

Hope it all has a happy ending.

hun - if you really cant adopt him - then phone a german shepherd dog rescue. and next time he comes round keep him there.
this poor dog sounds no danger to people - but roaming around on his own he is putting his life and others at risk.
the rescues will try their best to rehome - the dog warden - well it depends on their policy. some dogs are put down within a fortnight as i understand it.

he would have to go to the dog warden first, and then do his seven days in the pound before he could go to a rescue or be rehomed.. unless the owner is traced and does not want him back. (dog wardens have to keep unclaimed dogs for 7 days before they can be rehomed, passed to rescue, or PTS - some councils are more keen on rehoming and rescue than others - the best thing to do with any dog you gove to the DW to do its seven days is to ask them to keep you informed, and keep ringing them too...)
