By the way- came on here terrified of the dog, now thinking about adopting him?! You lot are so soft!
  • poor dog - peeing on another dogs pee is pretty normal, but I wonder why he is licking it up...

I would call the dog warden to be honest, there should be some sort of out of hours service, but it does vary a lot.. where abouts in the country are you?

It might be lonely but if it's in your garden it probably just wants to watch your TV.:D

Licking at another dogs wee is quite common on dogs who have been in communal kennels, it develops out of boredom.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Thanks everyone. Never seen the dog wee licking thing before!

I doubt traffic would be an issue as not many roads where he goes, though i guess I don't know everywhere he wanders. It's so sad that people get such lovely pets and then leave them to stray like that. I know it's probably silly to be scared. If I were braver I'd have let my dog sniff him before running off home!

He has gone now and is often around, so I suppose it's not urgent that I need the dog warden right now. May be worth reporting though, I will find out what to do. Would they just put him down though :(

Its very simple to deal with this problem especially if its placid. If you see the dog. Secure him in your garden. Ring the Dog Warden and say you have found a stray dog. They will collect the dog and return its to the owner and warn them about letting the dog wander around. If you did it about 3pm they might just take it to the kennels so they can finish and the owner would have to pay kennel fees to get the dog released. Keep doing this and eventually they will get so sick to death of it they will stop the dog roaming. Also if the dog is on its own then who is cleaning up its mess?

I have done exactly the above for a relative who had the same problem. It was a labadador and elderly and so was its owner and the they allowed the dog to walk around a close. They ignored my requests not to do this or to clean up the mess it was leaving behind. The final straw was when I was driving out and the dog walked in front of the car. Luckily I had just turned around so was going very slow and could stop.

The alternative is to live in fear of this dog outside, buy a load of biscuits so you can get in and out of your house and try not to step in the mess it leaves behind and put up with the actions of a crap dog owner.

When you say it licked it, was it drinking, or a few soft licks?

If the second, I would say it's trying to get as much information as possible. Often when dogs (though I first noticed this when walking a puma (another story, another day)) will keep their mouths open when intensely smelling. It allows the scent to also travel over the tongue, increasing the sensitivity. Although smelling a food can get you a very good idea of what it tastes like, you don't experience it all until you put it in your mouth.

My dog does this with very interesting urine only, and then rarely, to my knowledge he was never kept in a communal kennels.

It depends on the age, health and nature of the dog. Some breeds there are so many dogs looking for homes unwanted dogs of that breed are normally put down by most dog wardens regardless of what the dog is like (Staffordshire Bull Terriers being the top one). But Alastians I am pretty sure are a breed that is pretty easy to rehome. If the dog is not old has no serious health problems and friendly they will keep it for 7 days and then either try and rehome it or will pass it to a dogs charity to rehome. If you check the dog over to see what its health is like and its approx age and ask the Dog Warden before they take it they should be able to tell you if it will be put to sleep or put through for rehoming.

The downside of this is that the dog may not have a collar or be chipped so he wouldn`t be taken back to his owner. The dog wardens in our area will not take them back to the owner even if they are in the same street that the dog was found. The owners don`t sound like the sort of people who would pay the dog warden fees to get their dog back, in fact they don`t sound nice at all.

In our local rescue there were 6 german shepherds in last week, even pedigree breeds are difficult to rehome in most areas. There are not many rescues with a "will not destroy" policy, 7 days is usually how long they are given before being destroyed in some areas. :(

I know that some people don`t like dogs and that is their business but i do like them and would be more inclined to make a new friend and maybe make the poor things day.
