National Meter Database- Does it exist?

Arggh! Excuse my frustration, but I've spent the best part of my day off on hold and caught between two utility companies and I'm letting off a bit of steam here...

My problem:

I've been a customer of Scottish Power for some years on their dual fuel online tariff. A few weeks ago I received a notice that they were going to increase my DD from £49 to £63 per month, the second increase in a year. So, like a good money-saver I went to a few comparison sites and found out that the best new deal for me was with N Power and applied to them. Everything went smoothly until they requested the gas meters serial no. I told them it over the phone and they informed me that the number I quoted which incidentally is also on all of my SP paperwork doesn't related to my address Flat 1, but to Flat 2, which doesn't exist!

They said that it was all detailed on The National Meter Database and that they cannot proceed further without clarification and to contact my current supplier. Anyway, phoned SP and (yes, you've guessed it;)) everything is AOK and the meter is NOT registered to the wrong address. So it's one companies word against the other.

Where do I go from here? I am tempted to try another company but afraid that they will have the same problem. Is there any way I can check this database myself? Any ideas?

Thanks for listening..Oh and I have checked and although the meter is outside I'm pretty confident that it IS the meter servicing my flat, Well if it isn't, someone owes me an 11 year refund ;).

Well there is a site called ecoes, however it is for use of electicity suppliers (maybe gas), meter operators. What you need to do is look on your meter for the MPAN and ask SP what meter is linked to your mpan. If they are unable to tell you, insist that they book a site visit to clairfy what meter you have at YOUR mpan.

    Hope this helps (a bit!)

Thanks SS, I'll look into that with Scottish Power. They of the two companies have been the most helpful TBH, it almost makes me feel guilty for wanting to leave.

The problem I've got is that NPower are the ones saying that the meter is wrongly addressed and yet Scottish Power are saying that everything is fine so it's one against the other. Also, it's clearly not in Scottish Powers best interests to help to sort this out as a) If they do so they'll lose a customer and b) They don't agree that there's anything wrong. N-Power say that they can't do anything, so it looks like I'm stuck where I am.

And I thought it was supposed to be easy to switch...:(

gas has xoserve, think the reaons they dont want you until resolved is something they call cross metering or erroneous transfers.

    Hi Bayblue

Sorry to hear of your frustration. We would never stand in the way of a customer chosing another supplier if they believe this is the best option for them, so I will do my very best to help you get this matter resolved as quickly as possible for you.

If this issue related to your gas supply, then it will be the information held either with Transco (if they are your provider) or the Independant Gas Transporter (IGT). Your gas supply has a Meter Point Reference (MPR) number which will be linked to your gas meter serial number. This should also be linked with your correct address.

By the sounds of it, SP are billing you correctly however the Transco or IGT database might have your gas supply details registered to Flat 2 instead of Flat 1.

As SP are your current supplier, then it is up to us to amend any incorrect information that is held on a database for your gas supply.

You can check what details are registered on the Transco database by calling 0845 601 3048. I would provide the MPR number that we show on your statement (10 digit number shown on the bottom of page 2) and see what address they have this registered to.

If you want me to check the details for you then just send me the relevant information and I will investigate for you.

    Kind Regards

sorry scottish power rep transco will not hold the information as they stopped existing 5 yrs ago this July but the National Grid Mnumber line will do if it is not a igt - however as a gas supplier you have access to xoserve which holds all the data and feeds the national grid database - as it is the gas suppliers responsiblty to but the info onto xoserve

And the number you give for the National Grid data base is also incorrect it is 0870 608 1524

I work for the grid .

I think people just call National Grid 'Transco' because it's still remembered by most. Same as calling your local electricity distributor 'the Electric board'. ;)

that may be so but if a gas company rep is giving info it should be correct, not only name wrong but contact number also wrong.

The no for transco is 08706081524 or if an IGT the no is 01359240363
  • We switched from British Gas to EDF last November (2010) and we are still struggling with the issues of apparently incorrect meter numbers.

We have been told that the meter reference is not the one displayed for our property on the National Database. The meter is definately for our property as it is within the house.

We have provided photographic evidence of the meter as requested by EDF on several occassions and they have apparently forwarded this to British Gas. As it stands at the moment we are still waiting from some response as EDF say they cannot change it it is down to British Gas who forwarded the original meter information. British Gas seem either unable or unwilling to do anything about it according to EDF and we have been told that we cannot contact the National Database ourselves to correct the information.

So far EDF Customer Service has been excellent.

Any further advice would be useful - will try the numbers mentioned on here but we are coming to the end of the tie in period and frankly I would like it all sorted so we can move again!
    Thanks

SP rep if is gas related the information is not held by transco - it is held by xoserve or an igt.

Transco no longer exists and has not done so for several years.
