I love the idea that it's far easier to dehumanise the unemployed, than the reason for their unemployment in the first place.
I also love the idea that those that do, may one day find themselves unemployed, and become a lout themselves :j
Seriously, we don't need anyone on benefits. Unfortunately, the job market does, though. All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -

All the sums given above are 100% benefits. Paid for by the tax payer. There are other such families, but those were the first 4 I found. Yes, it's not common, but the system as it stands encourages this behavior.
I agree get rid of such benifits this will help cut down on single mums whos only ambition in life is to get pregnant and then get a state provided house and state cash to live off.
Also cut or get rid of unemplyment benifit. I saw a program on the tv about some britsh unemployed people asked to do some of the jobs that the imigrant population are doing too well. Jobs like farming etc Britsih were doing poorly and claiming the work was too hard. Employer saying they wouldnt empley them as they didnt work hard enough and of course the attitude of the britsh stank.
Unfortunately under labour they have been told time after time they are better and should improve there prospects. Great but we still need people on minimum wage to do jobs such as pick crops work in factories. Under labour they wouldnt have been satisfied until every one had a degree but were still doing basic jobs etc why cause there are only so many skilled jobs to go around. JUst more spin from the politicians.
After all i have a family to raise so why should my taxes go to help people with loads of kids who now cant work as they need to stay home to look after the kids."Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
Nobody is getting anything confused, just stating what else we want to go and why
I spotted a few posts on pg 2/3 which seemed to be getting the potential 500 payment from Child Trust Fund (250 at birth then a further 250 at a year old) and the Surestart Grant mixed up.
I think the grants are ridiculous, although I have benefitted from them twice. When I had my first child in 1999 there was no help available apart from milk tokens, reduced rate formula milk and 20 quid family credit a week. My two other children were born in 07 and 09, we have a combined income of around 42k (includes current tax credits, two salaries and disability living allowance) and we qualified for everything going :j I put my grants towards a nice gas guzzling people carrier.0 -

You got a Sure Start Maternity grant on a salary of £42k?All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.0 -

No... not on a SALARY of 42k. Thats our household income, made up of non taxable benefits, my part time salary and my partners salary. We have a disabled child and the money we receive from tax credits (disability element) and disability benefits makes up a large proportion of our income, which is not assessed for Surestart purposes.0 -
I dont have kids or benefit from this CTF in any way, but can understand why people are upset at it going, as firstly its only available to the child 18yrs old when they can use it for university/education and those families on low income would otherwise not be able to support them and pay these new expensive top up fees, the cost of education is only going to get worse.
I wonder how many of the Tory MP's kids/grandkids will struggle through life, not many i guess and i find it shocking the Lib Dems are supporting this as they are supposed to be the most concerned about child poverty/low income households.
Voted Lib Dems in the election but this was a big mistake, will be reverting back to Labour next time.0 -
It's the easiest cut to make as it's a gift not support. I'd rather lose CTF than have to pay increased NI or taxes (even worse NHS or education cutbacks). The deficit is huge and needs sorting out and cutting CTF will not reduce the quality of life for anyone. We all managed without the government giving us savings I'm sure our kids can. And I am in the bracket of people that will 'lose out' my son has not yet turned 7 and I'm due my second after the cut is made. I'm happy to save the money myself and at least I can feel good about itTaking baby-steps :beer:0

Or Xboxes and Playstations, it is the kids that decide what the money is spent on, not the parents.cashbackproblems wrote: »wonder how many of the Tory MP's kids/grandkids will struggle through life, not many i guess and i find it shocking the Lib Dems are supporting this as they are supposed to be the most concerned about child poverty/low income households.

Absolutely.... lets implement a more complex, uncompetitive tax system in order to fund such benefits in the future, and tax the rich to pay for it as there would be nothing they can do.....

We are getting really off topic here as I don't think anyone really believes, let alone the last Labour Govt., that maturing funds from CTFs would be sensibly used by the majority of 18yr olds to fund higher education.
Definately the cost of higher education is spiralling out of control, but that is for all not just the children from lower income families. Not many families, on average as well as low incomes, have the odd spare £30k knocking about to support their children through the process.
Be honest, how missed do you really think the token gesture of £500 or £1k will be? Not a lot is my guess, although the total when added together is a tidy sum which the Country can't afford to sniff at just now.
Many people who don't save for their children's future cite that they can't afford to and that it is more important to keep food on the table and a roof over their child's head. Wake up and smell the coffee folks - that is just what the Government right now has to do too! We might not like it but we don't have a choice.0
