Renewing car insurance just before moving?

Hi,

My car insurance is about to come up for renewal but I'm also about to move from one city to another about 3 weeks after the renewal.

As I don't yet know my new address (still looking for a place to rent) it's difficult to compare who's going to be cheapest for the new city. Also my current insurer charges an admin fee (plus any premium difference) for changes of address etc.

As I see it there are two options?

1. Renew insurance now based on cheapest provider for current area (with possibly checking likely cost with a sample postcode for the new area). Pay increase in premium and admin cost if applicable when I move.

2. Take out a temporary policy for the time between renewal and moving and be able to do a true cost comparison and avoid any admin charges.

What would you recommend?

Thanks,

D

Another alternative is to ring the Insurer, explain you are moving home shortly and have been getting other quotes but want to stay with them. If you speak nicely to the right person you can often get them to agree to waive the admin fee if you renew.

It would be wise though to check out quotes for the new area with whoever you take cover with so you can ensure they are fairly competitive when you change address

Another idea would be, once you've found a house, find the cheapest provider at this new address, then take a policy with them starting now at your old address. Then when you have to change address, they'll be cheapest.
If that makes any sense at all?
