Just a little warning about this scheme, you will lose the help as soon as one of your children turn 20 this can be a big shock if you have got used to only paying around £30 per month. You can't get out of having a meter and when you go back on to the ordinary tarrif if you haven't always been careful with water use you can end up with huge bills. I was on the scheme for about 5 years but as soon as my son turned 20 my bills shot up from £28 per month to £78 per month - just be careful!

  • hi there,
i have recently found out that there is such a thing as 'single occupancy' allowance. my water is provided by seven trent water. this is scheme was started in april 2009. it is only for people who are unable to have a water meter fitted
my bill for this year 2010-2011 is now capped at £199 (for a flat or terraced) rather then the orginal £375! still not as cheap as a meter but a impressive saving!!
    hope this helps someone!
  • Do you need to have a meter madmonk to join the scheme ?. I agree that water meters can be extremely expensive. My friend has just moved into a new build with her 3 children (one of which is tweenty) and her aprtner, her water bill for the month was £180 per month , Shocking !!!!

    Hi Tara,

Down here in Dorset (Wessex Water) you have to have a meter as part of the agreement. It might be that some water companies operate differently but it's just something to check and consider before signing up. I know that the first bills after my eldest son turned 20 were a terrible shock and I would hate people other to get the same shock!

You do have to have a water meter for the watersure scheme to apply. It is not available for RV bills as your usage makes no difference to the amount due.
