Paper vs big pants. Weirdly, I used paper pants with DS1 (vaginal birth) and DS2 (em c section, extensive bruising and very very painful) and they were very comfy but with DD (elective C section) I hated them and got DH to buy me some big pants from tesco that were so much more comfy.
So uhm.. buy a pack of each
A rocking chair saved my babies lives (cos I would have murdered them if I didn't get some peace), has to lie flattish for when they are tiny and then have things to entertain them when bigger.
DD is still in her crib at 7months, I got that for £25 off ebay - bargain! Never used the moses basket for her at all.
Don't buy loads of different sized sheets, just fold cot/cotbed ones to fit cribs/moses baskets etc.
Keep a stash of cash somewhere just in case. For example, you end up going up and down to hospital for whatever reason, you need petrol/travel money and parking/snack money. Your baby is early or smaller than expected and you suddenly need tiny baby or newborn sized vests and sleepsuits because the MSE 0-3month ones drown them. Same with nappies.
Vaseline is amazing stuff in a hospital bag. Dry lips? Sore nipples? Scabby hands from the handwash? Grazes on your foof and it BURNS when you pee? Smear it on0 -

But what I really would like to know, or have an idea of, from the mums out there, what do you consider to be absolute essentials for when bubs arrives and what do you think is a waste of money? I fully intend to use Tesco/Asda for clothes and wipes, and after the first month with use washable nappies...apart from that being swamped with "you really need xyz, or your baby will hate you" ads
Basically ignore the 'essentials' lists from places like Mothercare.
Make use of NCT Nearly New Sales etc.
Essentials - something for baby to wear (you'll get loads of gifts!), somewhere for baby to sleep (if you are not co-sleeping) and something for baby to eat (if not breast feeding) is it.
A pram/buggy or sling is needed - but second hand is fine.
If you do breast feed don't think you need one of these £100 'essentials of breastfeeding kits' either! :eek:0 -
Been giggling at this thread. Congrats OP.
Im not pregnant yet but trying so am keen to find out as much as I can just incase it happens soon (fingers crossed.)
I realise Im probably being dumb but why do you need so many disposable pants or old pants for after the birth? I thought that everything that was going to come out would come out at the birth? I should maybe stop reading this thread!! Thanks.:smileyhea0 -
You will bleed (lochia) for some days after the birth - like a heavy period, although I dont have pains associated with it. Im still bleeding slightly two and a half weeks after DD was born.
I gather it is less after a Caesarean as more is swabbed out while the doctors are in the uterus!:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -

You will bleed after birth - anything for two to six weeks (and for some, even longer). It might just be like a heavy period, but some women do loose a lot of blood. It's sensible to have old, comfy pants.0 -
I bled profusely for 8 weeks after every single one of mine.. and just when I thought it had stopped.. it would start again!!
though the first few days you think every drop of blood is pouring out and you'll have none left!! Another reason they check for anaemia a few days after birth!!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
