Seems weird to bring up task-manager and see two graphs instead of usual one.

Just enable HyperThreading on your Intel cpu, and you'll get 2 graphs as well! Or 4 if you've got a dual core. :-))
No reliance should be placed on the above.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
conroe chips are out this week i believe, and blow everything else away without being super expensive.

And they are the only ones so far that Microsoft have used with developing Vista.
Hence why CPU's and Motherboards are coming down in price.
Intel and AMD currently developing new 64 bit and possibly 128 bit cpu's/Motherboards to cope with VISTA.
  • This is a good offer but you need to take into account the cost of a new motherboard.
As has already been stated there are lots of good offers on processors with the release of conroe and AMD new chips.

However I would just add to some of the comments made about the AMD X2 in this thread.
While AMD chips may have been slower in the distant past the pentium D chips have not fared well against the X2 chips.
The bonus is that they work with most existing socket 939 boards so you don't have to upgrade your motherboard at additional cost
Even Dell have now started using AMD chips

See this review for an independent comparison....

hyperthreading isn't the same as having two cores, in fact in may situations hyperthreaded P4's are slower than non hyperthreaded, certainly for desktops

Your OS is now determing your CPU choice, interesting.

My view is that I'll but the cheapest cpu with the most processing power regardless of manufacturer. Fanboys are just pathetic children.

  • Latest Vista beta works fine on my old AMD athlon 3000+ test machine.....

I've installed a few of these chips in new computers for customers. overclock to 3.5ghz without any voltage increase. Very nice chips for the price :) Althought they run very hot.

Have just read through this thread and I can honestly say I haven't got a clue what you people are talking about! Jeez! Is any of this relevant to real life? Is this a good deal?
Just because you used to be you think everybody else is, don't you?

Yep a great processor stupidly cheap. I have one over clocked to 3.2ghz and it'll out do many processors twice its price. Will def kick any P4 !!!!!!!
Hope those with Dells etc learn a simple lesson: DON'T BUY shoddy factory built, non upgrade frendly computers. Also, never (unless its a great offer) buy from PC World!

boo.... intel are okay, but a pentium D :|

    check this out:

granted its an OEM, but a decent fan and heatsink kit you can get for around £20...

still, the pentium D is a great find if you are on a really tight budget.

lol, if you don't know what anyone here is talking about, it's best you just dont read it, because you wouldn't be able to install a processor.

(seems funny saying that considering how easy it is once you've done it lol)
