Every time I've ever been to a garage, they add the VAT at the end. Tho OP got an estimate not a quote. A quote would be in writing.
  • Well I phoned up the garage and spoke to the guy who gave me the quote, he said he would only be able to knock £45 off by not charging for his time.
I asked to speak to his manager and kept re-iterating the price quoted. The manager said there was no way they could accept the quoted price as they would be making a loss on it. I told him it was the price quoted and agreed to and I felt ripped off by now having to pay substantially more. Neither of us conceded any ground and eventually he said he would speak to head office to see what they could do. He called me back after 30 minutes saying they could accept £590 for the work (£80 less than quoted).

I paid and got my car back and it works fine. So I think I will use them in future.

Without MSE giving me consumer confidence, I'd have probably paid the £800 and felt resentful

Why on earth did they drop to LESS than £670?

So they would have made a loss at £670 and then decided to increase their loss by another £80.....

    Madness......
