Innaccurate car service quote. Help

My first post

I took my car in for a service and to repair the underside of my car. They phoned yesterday saying they would have to order a whole new exhaust , costing £500 and the total cost of work would be £670. I agreed to this so the work has been done.

Today they phoned for a card payment and said I owe £800. I queried this with the guy I spoke to yesterday. He says he thought the total was £670 but he was wrong and it was £800 and so this is what I have to pay.

Do I have any right to say I'm paying £670 and no more, and expect to get my car back?

It's Benfield Toyota BTW

  • Its his tough !!!!, he quoted you £670 and that's all you have to pay.

Proving it is another matter, however.

It's a Toyota dealership, not a back street garage. Not un unusual price for modern car at dealer.

Was it a Quote or an Estimate ?

    Quote ....you pay the £670

Estimate ... you probably end up paying the £800.

I know which the garage will say it was.

Do you have any written proof of the quote?
  • It was the amount given as the total amount i had to pay. I don't have written proof but my mother was also quoted the £670, and the guy agreed this is what he quoted.
    Does this help my case?

Was £670 the price without VAT?

This is a problem with a large number of garages (independents & franchises) they do not include the VAT in their initial quote. As it happen £670 + VAT comes to £787.25. Not that far from £800.

    +1 on the VAT....

and agree with others was it quote or estimate.

My car had an estimate last week for £80 final bill was £125 c'est la guerre.

Get it in writing the next time but most won't do it because some jobs can be a reall bu$$er to do. You have to trust the garage and when you stop trusting then you move elswheree

As far as I'm aware it is illegal to quote vat ex prices to private customers.
