this is exactly what I did and I have just bought another as was going past the farm shop on Sat, we are also 2 adults, 2 teens/adults portionwise.

I would say if those delivered by milk & more will stop you buying other stuff because you went to the shop for potatoes then the extra which also allows for delivery is worth it.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)

If you have somewhere cold to store them...got to be frost free but otherwise as cold as possible and preferably dark, dry and airy then bought-in potatoes will last a month or so. Keep them in a steamy warm kitchen and even in a dark sack they'll sprout in a week. Unwashed potatoes keep longer than washed and home grown potatoes keep longer too. (Because they're not subjected to variable storage...cold warehouse-> warm shop -> kitchen or wherever.)

I would think it's worth a trial run though if you feel you'll eat say 80% of them. You can still eat sprouting potatoes btw...just cut the shoots off. Come the summer months when they start lifting the crop potatoes will get cheaper in the shops and you'll probably eat less of them anyway.

  • The price seems very high, but if you decide to do it, to save waste, empty out bag and put all damaged or less than perfect in another bag and use first, the rest of the perfect potatoes will last longer if damaged ones are taken out. there are just 2 of us and we do not waste many.
diluvsdiscounts £4 is a good price, well done.
  • Thanks for the replies, I think I will have one sack for a trial. I am always running out of potatoes and have to have an emergency bag of frozen mash and an emergency back of wedges in the freezer!

We do have a very good fruit and veg shop nearby but I don't drive and struggle to fit large amounts of stuff in my pushchair basket, and I am trying to cut down my supermarket delivery to once a month instead of weekly. I do go to the village shops approx 3 times a week anyway.. but milk/bread etc takes priority and I always forget potatoes!

It is a high price I feel but seeing as how you don't drive then I can't see many alternatives for you.
As long as they are "dirty" spuds (ie not been washed) they will keep as long as they are cool and dry. Do not wash them just keep them in the the bag as they are (assuming bag is not plastic if course).

  • I've just had another thought.. I have seen sacks of potatoes in my local co-op too, and I think they deliver if you spend £25 while you are in store.. I will check out the price tomorrow, and compare it.. Usually I get them with my asda delivery - 2 x 2.5kg bags for £2, I *think* these last me about 2 weeks but I often throw some away because they have gone off (because of the plastic I think)

never leave potaoes or any veg come to that in plastic it makes it sweat and makes them go off - if u can get some cloth type bags -(lakeland do them) or keep the sacks from potatoes to use

or an old small washing basket will even do the trick - keep it in a cold/cool dark place and thell last longer

Potatoes by the sack can be a good price if you have someone who can get them from a roadside seller in a country area. My folks have The Potatoman, a farmer who sells his own spuds door-to-door in their town for the past 35 years, and they pay £6 for a sack that size. £9.99 seems steep to me. The other posters are bang on the money about frost-free storage and sorting the spuds by quality. I'd suggest that this would be a better plan for the autumn as spuds are now starting to sprout (seed spuds are in the shops and will be sown in March) and you'll really need to go thru the sack and rub off the shoots every week or the tuber will put all its goodness into the shoots and leave you with a wizened and rubbery spud not worth eating.

I've just bought a sack of spuds from a greengrocer £6.80 I paid for them.

They are fantastic, I too got sick of running out.

The best thing is they are huge, really, really huge potatoes, I used a couple for roasts yesterday, saved tons of peeling too.

I'd go for it, the number of times I've thought we'd have baked spuds for tea and then either having piddley little ones or none at all got on my nerves.

I think you'll save money, save time, and have a ready supply there ready and waiting.
