Until they go off; which might well be in several months time.

Just store them in the fridge and i'm sure they will be fine.

I grow them and just plait them and hang them up in the shed till I want to use them. Any that go off are quite obvious (they go squishy, slimy, smelly (even more:eek: ) and if that happens then I throw them away. If I had more time / less onions I would probably freeze them before they ever got to that stage, as stated above! Always seem to have plenty though - I still have a few shallots from last year now.

I buy the large bags of cheap onions and store them hanging up in a pillow case in my shed. It seems to work as they are lasting for ages. If you don't have a shed then you could put them in a paper bag and put them in a dark dry place, cupboard, under the stairs etc
  • Do I have to keep them in the 'fridge,or can I store them in a cool cupboard?

Cut off the tops, leaving about an inch of stem, and store the bulbs in mesh bags in a place that's cool (35 to 40 degrees F), dry and well-ventilated.

Check your stash frequently; if any bulbs have sprouted, use them right away.

They freeze well too. If you are prone to crying when chopping onions (I cry when I cut up a spring onion - my tear ducts are wimps!), then peel then all at once, put them in a food processor and blitz them. Then freeze in roughly 1/2 onion sized portions and they'll always be on hand and you'll cry less

Hi I store our harvested onions once they have been left to dry out in the sun, in old tights/stockings place an onion in tie a knot before putting the next one in then they are hung up in the broom cupboard for storage, just cut one of at a time to use has the added advantage of if one starts to go soft it is not touching another onion to start that one going soft.

For regular use, I keep a plastic basket with lots of holes in the sides in a cool cupboard in the kitchen - filled with onions and garlic. (Spuds are in another alongside).

For the rest of the harvest, I keep them in the shed once dried out (put most out there last night). Ones with long stems, get plaited into sets of 10. Some with stems too short to plait (slugs were bad this year) went into net bags and hung that way, and I had one old pair of tights to use for some larger ones, just like Huxley.

Lakeland sell an Onion bag which increases the storage time.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.
