I've done both. My window in the living room is a large bay window (large in height) with 1 wide pane in the middle and 2 narrow panes at either side. After lots of research, I ended up buying custom made ones. They have made such a difference to the room it is unbelievable.
For one of the bedrooms, I needed a sub-standard sized blind. However, I needed to cut some off each end. I clamped the slats together and used a circular saw. I then used a hacksaw for the metal top. You can't tell they've been cut now that they are up. They fit perfectly in the window.
I agree wooden blinds can be cut. I have cut down two B&Q colours wooden blinds recently. Tape everything together tightly to make it easy to cut and reduce splintering and it's not too difficult.
