What? Mate you're like a 30 minute drive away! Ok, maybe nearer an hour but still - you have to visit leeds..... its like a newer nicer version of Manc - but with one benefit, no Mancs in town :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Hmm, no mate - a typical Manc would be watching the AC Milan game and usually live at least 200 miles away from the city! :rotfl::rotfl: (you get that right?).....
My labrador? Aaaaw, I love labs mate - but I am short sighted - not totally blind
:D
Have a good night mate - be good! I'm off for an early night (still hungover from my 6 pint ordeal yesterday)
:p

Hi Guys
This is a great thread. Have been single most of adult life. I do have a lovely BF but at present we don't live together and therefore no shared bills. Completely understand that feeling of "well there is only me to look after me" and think it's really important for Singletons to do everything they can to secure their financial future. It gives a huge sense of achievement and peace of mind. If I'm single when I'm in my 50's onwards I don't want to be worrying about money and retirement - I want to be enjoying myself and affording things.
So this is a bit rambling as I can't quite articulate what I want to find out.........
OP'ing the mortgage has been something on my mind for about 3 years. 3 years ago I got a decent rise and was no longer worrying about ends meeting. So it's now high on my agenda but don't feel that I'm doing as well as I should be. I'm really curious as to how you all do it? Some people seem to put away loads (hundreds) and it doesn't always seem to be down to having a massive salary.
My recent OP's have been funded by underspending against my budget and also little extra bits of income such as Halifax Reward payments etc. So the OP's and a bonus at xmas mean that so far I've taken 18months off my mortgage. I've worked out that my OP's are the equivalent of about 6% of my take home pay. I can't seem to eek out any more, at least until a regular saver account ends in August but I've already decided that I need to up my pension contribution.
I don't live frugally (you know, like those guys on £4/5k a year) but there again I have never lived extravagantly or been one for buying many things. I've built up what I feel is a decent savings pot and I'm still saving but less than before. But even so, my current prediction is that I can only knock about 5 years off which just isn’t flipping good enough! Especially when I hear about people reducing by 10/15 years on much bigger mortgages.
How are you doing it? Frugal living? Second jobs or just a good salary to start off with?
Thanks in advance of any responses0 -
Hi Curlygirl,
I've knocked around 10 years off (in 18 months) with the aid of the plummeting base rate.
I took out a tracker at 0.89% above base rate when rates were at 5%.
When rates fell I continued to pay as if rates were still at 5% and the combined effect is knocking around 10 years off so far.
I did start to make OP's too, but have now realised that it is better to save save save whilst rates are low for me.
I put around £500 a month into a regular saving account that pays more in interest than I pay on my mortgage (even when you account for tax)
I live on my own, I don't earn masses, I try to be frugal and make things last - don't throw out chicken carcasses, make soup etc, don't buy stuff you don't need - bulk buy things when they are on offer - did you know you can freeze margarine? It's often BOGOF at tesco/morrisons so buy 4 or 6 at a time, same with bread - take out half a loaf at a time so it isn't going off quicker than you can eat it.
At the end of the month I'm left with around £5-£10 in my current account which is fine as it pays no interest and proves that my budget is working. I do have instant access money that I can top up with if I'm spending a lot more.
September is the worst month for me - in the space of 2 days I have to get car Ins, MOT, House Ins and my car serviced. I know you can shop around in advance - but it always seems to end up on the same CC bill as I've not timed it well at all!
Hope this helpsMortgages Oct 2020: £308,283 Jul 2021 £286,600 October 2022 £253,456 MFW-22 #9 MFIT-T6 #350 -
Yes, live on my own. I've overpaid my mortgage by 10% each year so far. I'm aiming for £50K outstanding by the end of this year.Happy chappy0
