Strongbow tastes like crap, it really does, it's not a nice taste, chemicals and sugar.
Maybe so, but that's been the drink, I have enjoyed. If I drink the real stuff - I am sozzled within 1 pint over 2hrs - not good on a night out on the town lasting anything between 4-6hrs.
a silly reason for a thread
Ouch, I know I asked for opinions... But I do like your original response, try and find something weaker.

Does anyone know of a dry, 'fizzy' cider on the market - that ofc will not break the bank?

As promised, updating on the drink diary. Finished the diet coke, and am on the 2nd can.
  • Mentioned previously and it ain't bad although probably more medium than dry.
Would take a tanker full to get wazzed

As a short term solution have you though of drinking your strongbow 'over ice'?

A pint glass filled with ice cubes then cider will still taste fizzy, but will eventually dilute the cider so that you're not drinking quite so much. :)

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

Oi you lot - please :heart:GIVE BLOOD  - you never know when you and yours might need it back! 67 pints so far.

Well you are the one saying that the alcohol has absolutely nothing to do with your wanting to drink the cider.
Therefore your thread is about wanting to give up a drink, a drink you don't like the effects of and that you will have to stop drinking anyway if you are lucky enough to get pregnant.
Isn't it starting to look a little silly to you?

Everyone has been focused on the fact that alcohol is involved, while you have done nothing but say that is wrong.

Either you are right and alcohol isn't a problem, so stop drinking it if you want to get pregnant, what is more important to you?
Or you are wrong and alcohol is the reason you want to drink it, so stop drinking it if you want to get pregnant, what is more important to you?

I'll give you a blunt answer next time if you want :p

I'm with lotus eater here, I don't think you have acknowledged you are an alcoholic yet. There are plenty of fizzy apple alternatives if it was about taste. Given the quantity of Strongbow you are drinking it must have some effect and I imagine you have increased this over the years to reach that level of satisfaction you crave.

Please don't try for a baby until you have sorted this - you've taken half a step by posting here, why not go see AA. Whatever you want to call it - it is an addiction to an alcoholic beverage and that's what they are trained to support people with.

    Hi MSE'rs

Chrinkle & Lotus-eater. Ouch, and yes I may not have liked how you typed your replies, they are accurate. My opening statement did say it. I can't ask for help, and then ignore the recommendations. Thats not the point of this support forum. I need this kick up the bum, and this is (highly likely) why I came on. I know I am going to get some tactful answers, some I think I am not ready for, and like yours' a kick up the backside, to start it all.

I am a loner by nature and not a person that talks about my feelings, so this is so why I want to try this alone first (with your help), and if that fails, then yes, AA it will be.

So what I have done today. Bought some apple fizzy pop, and when I asked for low / non-alcoholic cider, I was taken to Koppperberg. Sorry Pee, I hadnt realised they did no-alcoholic pear cider, so I got 3 bottles. There were few other apple pops from Asda, but I thought, I should like / be able to combine them at least one of them, and if not can go back in the next few days. Unfortunately my local Tescos, is one of mini ones, so I don't think the low-cider will be available in there, but will check it out.

Penny-watcher - good tip. I have dug into the back of the kitchen cupboards and found the ice-cubes tray, and its in the freezer already. Especially as I love the drink cold - definitely not luke warm.

Primrose - Good idea. I will definitely keep track of what I do save, and put into pot to be taken out after 6mths.

And yes, that folic acid prescription will be staying on the shelf until I see an improvement. If I cant make the step to improve now (pre / during the folic acid period), it will be much harder to be not drinking after the contraception has stoped, and during pregnancy.

Perhaps, I should change the title to 'diary'

    Update

Well that fizzy apple pop, was abolsutely horrible, it was like drinking liquid sweet candy yuck :(

Tonight, I started with a bottle of 0% Koppperberg, and yep it was as sweet a pear cider that I remembered. Quite yummy, but 1 bottle at a time is enough.

Adding ice cubes to the cider, and using a small glass (smaller than a 1/2 pint), makes quite a difference. The one extra tip I have found that has worked, is to not refil the glass until all the ice has melted. So as I prefer the cider to be cold (kept in the fridge), to then add ice, makes the drink colder for longer, before the ice melts. Tonight its reduced the amount drunk my 1/3 :) Small step, but a starting one.

Kopaberg do alchol free cider and it tastes like the alcoholic version, its not cheap but its a great alternative to the real thing.

You can buy it widely and in the major supermarkets.

I like bavarian apple beer from Tescos and its also gone down well with visitors who have tried it.

You can get de-alcholised wine, beer and larger today, a much better range than even 5 years.

I also can do 1-3 nites a week with no drink what so ever, which makes me think I am not a definite candiate for AA just yet. But I could easily top over.

So, I guess I am writtng this to try and start a journey. OF NOT needing to go to AA.

You could water the stuff down, then it will be weaker. I suppose you will have a problem with this though.

My OH went for months at a time last year without alcohol. He's still an alcoholic though. He's not in the gutter, he's not begging, his liver hasn't failed yet, he has an impressive CV. But he's still an alcoholic.

What's wrong with going to AA? It's entirely anonymous. It won't go on your medical records. It's a self-help organisation which can offer you all the support you need, if you want it. AA will have you, whatever you think you are.

You don't HAVE to go to a meeting and say, "Hi I'm Anonlass and I'm an alcoholic"!!! You don't even have to speak. You could just say you've got a problem with the strength of the cider you like.

AA have got a line that goes something like: better to be in an AA meeting pretending to be an alcoholic, than in a pub pretending not to be one.

They say that alcoholism is an illness which convinces you that you aren't ill.

I think that deep down you know what's going on, really.
