MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should Theo tell the boss about Wayne and Jermaine?

It depends on Theo's relationship with Wayne and Jermaine and how far he wants to go within the company. A call centre job probably isn't a job you'll be in for years (is it?).

If they are good friends tell them you don't agree with what they are doing but don't snitch. If they are not good friends then it's fair to assume they are telling others about the glitch and someone higher up will find out soon.
  • It may not be necessary to inform on these two employees even though they are being dishonest by failing to disclose the error. These things often come to light during an audit when no doubt their salaries would be adjusted to compensate for it.
  • Theo should give them a chance to give themselves up and inform them that if they don't then he will tell on them.
The company will more than likely not sack them as they will also have to say that they will repay all the money they stole.

Yes he should tell the boss, The company may not be able to handle the extra money going out and losses mean job cuts so if his mates loose their jobs which is better than the company facing closure or making more staff redundant!

This is a good one. It must be, because I don't know what I would do - very unusual!

I assume the 'glitch' just applies to W & J (it could be many more, of course) and that Theo only gets his 1.33% when he works overtime. If they are all drinking together they are probably mates and Theo won't want to 'grass'. However, I regard it as theft and I'm sure WHEN the error is discovered, as it almost certainly will be, they will legally have to pay the excess received back.

As it is the employer's fault they will probably be offered an extended period of repayment, by deduction from future salary, but only IF they can persuade the employer 'they didn't realise/notice' previously. Of course, if they should leave the company, any remaining balance could be demanded in full.

I think Theo should explain the above to W & J and suggest they go to their employer and claim they have only just realised, as a result of a casual conversation with other employees. Then wait to see what the employer suggests. They may be allowed to retain a proportion (or even all) of the overpayment, the employer should appreciate their honesty which will do their future prospects no harm and they have 'got in' before their eventual discovery. Theo might also point out that the longer it goes on the more difficult it will be to pay back the steadily increasing amount overpaid.

Finally, Theo should point out that whilst he won't report what he knows, he thinks that they are idiots for telling him (and probably others, who may not be such reliable friends). If they have told anyone else that may panic them into 'coming clean'. If they do nothing' at least Theo will ultimately have the satisfaction of saying "I told you so".

Blackmail? Don't even think about it. Not only is it worse than theft; Theo may be implicated when the glitch is discovered and all three will be penalised, because they obviously knew they were doing wrong.

Theo should NOT tell his boss. He should mind his own business and stop getting involved. Under NO circumstances would I grass someone in that situation even if i was doing the same job as them. If he does grass I hope they find out that it was him and smack him right in the mouth!!! Jealously will get him no where.

Morrally the answer is yes however on a practical level it would depend upon the company and its policy with regards to 'whistleblowing' and whether he could report this anonymously without any prejudice against him. Most eficient companies have strict budgets these days for overtime and would eventually realise that the number of hours that were being worked didnt equate to the amount of money being paid out and would investigate. I am sure it would eventually come to the surface and as the company can legally take back any over payments that have mistakenly been paid he would be doing those now 'benefitting' a favour in the long term.

You can certainly tell who is employed and disgruntled and who is employed and happy in their jobs or an employer reading the threads.

Maybe if his friend where honest in the first place poor Theo would not be put in this position! I for one would not want to employ or work with dishonest staff.

Live an let live.... The Company is at fault here.
  • Regardless of whether they are discovered or "grassed upon" or not, the fact of the matter is that W&J are obtaining money they are not entitled to, by dishonest means. In other words it is fraud or theft. And if we know about this and say or do nothing then we are kind of aiding and abetting a crime. This once great nation of ours is going down the tubes, precisely because of this kind of dishonesty (among other sins) from the highest to the lowest. We will all have to stand before the "Big Boss in the sky" on judgement day and give an account of what we have done and for our attitudes, regardless of who we are.
