Is it possible to compare cost of oil against gas?

  • Late to this thread, but you might want to take a look at the SEDBUK website. It measures the efficiency of different boilers and gives indicative costs for heating different sized properties.

Use the Annual Fuel Cost Estimator on the link. The most efficient oil boiler is the Grant at 97%, so using 97% and Oil the cost of heating a detached home is £453.

The most efficient gas boiler is the Baxi at 91.3%. The indicative cost to heat a detached house is £397.

This is based on unit costs of £1.63 per kwh for gas and £2.17 per kwh for oil.

Current high oil costs need to be taken into account. When we first moved to an "no gas" area 4 years ago, oil was only 22p per litre and is currently (?)34p per litre

Now that is what I call expensive energy;)

That site is good for comparisons but of course the kWh prices of gas/oil are way out of date and they have gone up a great deal - but fortunately not to the prices you gave! I think a gas bill of over £50,000 a year for me would be just too much!
