We also write our own Chance and Community Chest cards. They include "Hostile Takeover Bid: You may buy *any* undeveloped site on the board, for current value"
"Power cut! If you own the Electricity Board, pay all other players £20 compensation each"
but my favourite is "Caught kissing Liz Hurley. The Sun pay you a £100 for the photo"

  • So how much is a good amount for the emergency fund? Twice the highest value (in terms of the cost of landing on it) square on the board at all times?

(Am now itching to play and thrash my dad  - his technique is to throw everything at building up the dark blues asap which then instantly bankrupts anyone who lands on them. As someone quite rightly pointed out though, this does take a while to do. So I'm hoping that I'd be able to beat him by developing the oranges...mwahahahahahaha!)

How about the sum of the single most damaging square on each side of the board?

I know this was just a fun blog entry but if that had been me playing I'd have told him where to stick his advice, its a game who cares if they're playing it how YOU think best as long as they are enjoying it. The last thing I'd want is someone poking their nose in and telling a player if they do such and such they'll win - yeah thanks for killing the game we were happily enjoying without you until that point.

That's right JD. We need to encourage a less competitive generation. Far too many people want to be winners. It's much better to be a loser - less stressful.

Let's hope we can avoid gold medals at the next Olympics and please, no more British F1 winners. Let the Germans have it.

    Britain needs more losers.

I have a further tactic which other players don't spot until its too late.

In the early phases of the game I will offer other players money for what seem to be random properties or trade, i usually offer more than things are worth and they don't see why.

What I am actually doing it making sure I own at least 1 of every colour therefore making sure I am the only player who has a chance of a monoply.

I still remember the realisation on my brothers face when he twigged what I had done. I soon got the full set of reds and the rest was just waiting for them to run out of money to which i then bought more off them and crushed them like ants.

But if they do insist on playing these things with an accountant than they should see these things coming.

  • MARTIN,
MSE monopoly would be a really good way of teaching financial education in schools. I know you don't think 'merchandising is appropriate' but this would be a really easy way to help educate the youth of today not only into debt but also about debt.
(I'm hoping that by subtly quoting you several times you'll be more willing to actually create this game!)
    I personally think it's a brilliant idea :)

I usually go for the reds 1st, then the orange group. Dark blue is good when you're well ahead ,due to the Go to Mayfair card. Developing this group is expensive but is good for the knockout blow. I don't bother with stations/utility groups as you can't develop them therefore you need to buy them all for a high return [although it's useful to buy one of them to prevent other players from doing so]
