Candygirl is absolutely right. Prior to using a meter she would have had a fixed annual charge as she explained. This is usually split into 10 equal monthly payments if you pay by DD.
There is no guesswork involved and bears no similarity to either Gas or Electricity (except in the case of Staywarm users) because they are usage based and not a fixed annual sum.
The companies change the DD figure each year to take into accound rises in charges.
Now that she is on a meter the situation changes and is the same as Gas and Electric and she could get into arrears if she uses more that the DD pays for.
It also appears strange that the amount in dispute is almost exactly 2 months DD charges, apart from an odd 88p. I would be on the phone first thing Mon morning and find out if they are charging you another 2 months then your meter needs reading on that date as the start of you paying by meter.
Don't let them fob you off !!0 -

Just had a thought that the original bill would have been for £280.88p so the £56.88p would equate to 2 payments missing. They always add on the odd pence to one of the DDs.
Looks like you need to speak to them and also check that 10 DDs have been paid from your bank account beforehand.0 -
