The frustrating thing with shows from the US is not only the amount of adverts, but the amount of time they spend showing the same footage over and over for "recaps".

"Sponsored by" Adverts -> "Last week on... recap" -> Titles -> Adverts -> New footage -> Recap footage -> Adverts -> Recap footage -> New footage -> Adverts ;(

Oh, and the fact that US networks insist on advertising for other shows during the one you're trying to watch, with stupid little animations, banners and logos that pop up at the bottom of the screen, often blocking a good quarter of the screen.

Totally agree with Requiem. We aren't going to forget the previous segment in 4 minutes....

And have you noticed that BBC now make their programmes in sections so that an ad-break can be introduced when it gets repeated on a commercial channel months later.
Good example is Antiques Roadshow - after about 20 mins, the AR animated symbol comes up and we get transferred to a separate piece by Fiona Bruce talking to one of the presenters for 3 or four minutes - then it's back to the program. Presumably Fiona's piece would be edited out and ads put in for the reruns.
Same thing with Bargain Hunt - when Tim Whatsisname goes off to show you a stately home halfway through the program, this can be edited out and ads take its place.

More difficult to spot in drama productions, but still there I think.

I noticed freeview has ads ner enough every 15 mins, on all channels at the same time, i wondered why they were selling "free" view boxes years ago, they did not tell us they would soon be invading our homes with so many ads that mean near enough nothing to most of us, sometimes the ads start within 6 or 7 minutes of the programme itself, and last longer than 8 minutes. And now the new thing is to advertise DURING the programme itself with textx and anumations appearing at the bottom the the screen.

I want my money back for the freeview box, this is not what i was lead to believe i bought into.
    Owed out = lots.

    YEs, it goes

    Start programme:

Last week on surf patrol this and that happened, this week this and this happens.

    New footage

    Ads

Recap "Surf patrol lifeguards have been rescuing a old man and this is what happened earlier ..."

New footage of old man being brought on beach and laid down.

    Ads

Recap "Lifesavers have been rescueing a old man ... " cue old footage, the previous footage and new footage of man with oxygen mask on"

    Ads

"Back at surf patrol this old man was rescued" cue all previous footage, repeat the action 3 times with drums in background to make it spectacular, and cue old footage from start to finish, the entire footage shown of the rescue was 6 minutes, but spread out over an hour by editing.
    Owed out = lots.

Simpsons actually lasts 23 and half minutes on average, os it's not 18 minutes long. This is proven by the amount of episodes that actually SAY how long they last.

OFCOM have changed it so on terrestrial TV, only 8 minutes of adverts can be shown in a one-hour show (this doesn't include when it ends, as this is always designated as a "filler") Sky is different as they work on their own times. If you're that bothered about it on terrestrial TV, why not note down EVERY advert break and how long it is in the next week of shows in ITV1 and Channel 4 and see how long they are. They are allowed longer advert breaks in longer than one hour, and tey do take advatage of it.

A little birdie told me that if you download tv shows online, not only can you see brand new series of your favourite shows as soon as they are released in the US - usually months before they are shown in Britain (unless it's a British show, obviously. I'm talking stuff like Desperate Housewives, Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, The Big Bang Theory, Chuck, How I Met Your Mother, House, etc.); but all adverts are completely removed, too. :x

    ... Just sayin'!

We were recently in New York and watched the US version of deal or no deal. They had 9 ad breaks, and I swear more ad time than program time.

And I have also seen an advert on US TV last over ONE HOUR non stop!!!! It was for a pest repellent product that plugged into the house mains socket and "protected the whole house" by travelling around the electrics wiring emitting something or other. Sounds cancer inducing to me, (and the product does too :)
