Oh and another thing while I'm on the subject that I don't understand, maybe the padders can tell me how this works... How come Scotland and Wales have their own parliaments, but their votes are taken into account in the elections like the one just gone? I saw somewhere that it would have been an overwhelming Tory majority in England had the Scots/Welsh votes not been counted (not great but at least a decision) and was wondering why the votes count if those countries have their own parliaments anyway? Come on you Scots, tell me how it all works I don;t geddit!
I think (but I'm not sure either) it could have something to do with our MSP's sitting in Westminster aswell as Holyrood...F_F is smart, she'll be able to tell us

One thing I must admit to not understanding is all the hate for the torys? From what I've seen of their policies they seem to have some common sense, particularly surrounding the benefits culture and how to try and tackle it. (Don't like the idea of teacher redundancies though :rotfl:) It always seems to me that people have a real hatred for anyone they deem 'posh' and I just don't get it myself.

Woah long post - and I don't even have a pad to post! (sorry) I will resume tomorrow when I know what the bank accounts look like!
xx
My hate for the Tories (and hate is the word I'm afraid) is mainly because of their disregard for ordinary people the last time round. They have (and sadly Labour are the same now) ignored "normal" folk to put money in the pockets of big business and generally sh*t on the working classes. As a former union rep, I genuinely will never vote for them, even if they could promise us all unicorns and wells that give us all molten gold. I just don't trust them.angelicmary85 wrote: »I think (but I'm not sure either) it could have something to do with our MSP's sitting in Westminster aswell as Holyrood...F_F is smart, she'll be able to tell us
We have our own parliaments here and in Wales because we have devolved government. This is different from full independance as we cannot decide all issues for ourselves in the Scottish parliament. There was a bit of a stooshie up here as the Tories had big billboards up about their plans for education, but they can't fulfill any of these in Scotland as it's a devolved issue and the Scottish parliament makes the decisions!
One of the reasons that we have devolved government is because we have reacted so badly to previous governments having no mandate to govern Scotland. The last Tory government had (I may be corrected on this as I'm going from memory) no seats in Scotland and were heroically unpopular due to the Poll Tax farce and so on, yet we still had Tory policy deciding things for us as England elected the Tories with a majority.
We still get to vote on Westminster elections as we're not an independant country and many things in the UK parliament still affect Scotland. It's known as the "West Lothian Question" as Scottish/Welsh MPs can vote on issues that only affect those in England as you don't have a devolved parliament for England. I think that if there was a parliament for English issues it would possibly be fairer, but I'm one of the Scots that likes having a measure of control in terms of the parliament but I do support the union and don't want us to be an independant country...passport control at Berwick Upon Tweed anyone?! :rotfl: Egads, the thought of the Axis of Fish (Salmond and Sturgeon) leading us as an independant country would have me moving Doon Sooth before you could say "disaster".
I shall now return PAD to it's normal business.

Axis of fish :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I'm glad to see that Berwick finally ended their war with Russia several years ago.
Like you, I mistrust the Tories more than I mistrust Labour.
I'm afraid my memories of the Thatcher years are indelible and largely due to those, I don't believe I could vote Tory even if I became unexpectedly wealthy.
Although self-employed for many years past, I was a union rep too at a time when union reps were getting a lot of unfair stick due to the actions of a few of the less reasonable ones.
I'm virtually unemployable these days. 19 years of being self-employed has taken care of that.0 -
