Because there is less money coming in to the exchequer and the government can't keep spending more and more money on things. Something has to give as we can't keep borrowing more money which will be repaid by Joe Public paying more tax and NI. That isn't fair.0

Or the benefit system?0 -
Perhaps they could give up the war mongering?
Or the benefit system?
As for the benefit system, I think it needs streamlined with more going to those who need it like people with disabilities, severe illnesses or young children. I would also like to see a big increase in Carer's Allowance. A family which earns £50k or £60k would have to make do with less financial help from the state.0 -

anyone would think this was greece and our economy totally fooked...it isnt.
from what i can see jc staff are over-worked under-staffed and in the majority of cases poorly paid!0 -

I assume your a jobcentre employee? so I don't find your response in the slightest surprising, just what I've come to expect, arrogant, dismissive and rude people.arent civil servants tax payers as well?

Which would apply equally to lower grade workers in the private sector. You will find many more minimum wage workers in the private sector than in the civil service!
Striking achieves nothing but disruption, and the people who are affected are not those who have caused the problem.Gone ... or have I?0 -
As far as I know the PCS strike is over the Civil Service Compensation Scheme changes. Also they are the ONLY union striking on this. The other unions have agreed to the new scheme, which in the current climate is very generous.
I am with Prospect Union and they are not striking so I will be working. That said, I know a lot of PCS members who don't agree with the Industrial Action.
I wouldnt be in the PCS union if you paid me.0 -

the only reason for that is the private sector is far far bigger than the public sector, and striking can acheive results i remember being offered 8% pay rise in the 70s the unions wanted 30% we went on strike and got 27%...result.
many people in the dwp earn less than those whos benefits they administer that must be really galling for them, would you not agree?0 -
Having a thread which has turned into a debate about how much public services should be paid/their rights in a forum which exists mainly to aid those who have problems with the same public services is a little stupid isn't it?0

Please keep this thread on topic and appropriate to this board (please see this rule).
In other words, help and info for the people who may need to use the effected services over the next few days.
