Hi
I have had a brief scan and couldn't find an answer, so hopefully I am not repeating a previous post!

Yesterday I bought an Xbox, the man helping me in Game annoyed the heck out of me so bought somewhere else, however whilst trying to flog me the Xbox he kept trying to sell me a power pack for the controller. It took me a while to work out why, as he was really unclear why I needed it. Eventually I worked out he was telling me (in the most techy manner he could manage!) the controllers worked on AA batteries, but I couldn't replace the batteries with rechargable ones, but couldn't give me a reason why either. He just kept insisting that I would either have to spend a fortune on batteries or buy the power pack.

So can I use rechargable batteries, and if not why?
Non-techy answers welcome :D

He's talking out his rear end. You can use rechargeable AA batteries, they work just the same as normal AAs.

Thanks guys! I thought as much as at one point he even inferred that the batteries were not removable and got really unstuck when I asked about how I replaced them! It was a very strange encounter in which I was not going to be able to buy it unless I bought an extra of some kind! Well one less sale for Game yesterday!!

We've been using rechargables in out controllers for about 5 years, so you should be ok.

Game's play and charge kit (what they were trying to flog you) is overpriced. I picked one up off eBay much more cheaply. I must admit they are very convienient - no need to take batteries out and plug them into the wall to charge - simply plug the cable which comes with the kit into the controller, and the other end into your Xbox or any other gadget with a USB port.

Things don't always work with rechargeables due to the different voltages.

Standard alkaline batteries have a typical output voltage of 1.5V
Rechargeables (NiCd/NiMH) have a typical output of 1.2V

I'd even say that standard alkaline batteries have a typical starting voltage of 1.6V - at least, that's what my multimeter tells me.

i think i read somewhere in the instruction booklet that they advise against rechargable aa batteries. why i dont know. i guess they may lose their power quite quickly and you would forever be recharging them.
