my antivirus was Avira free edition which has been really good up till now but "antivirus 2010" managed to disable my antivirus and software firewall.
And as already mentioned I used super antispyware free, malware bytes free, spybot s & b free for spyware protection.

Hard to say for sure, but chances are it came through a website

Youd be much better using FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin to stop things like that

saw this mentioned a few times, how do you check if you have the noscript plugin. using 3.6 at the moment. thanks

I was correct the first time
You cant possibly have noscript and not know its there as most websites simply wouldnt run correctly

yes it did - I was surfing the internet using I.E 7 when the infection started.
would it be safer to use the AOL browser rather than I.E

Preferably use Firefox and Noscript, but at least get IE up to IE8
