in Water bills
until someone comes to have a look?
We had a meter fitted 3 years ago and used an average of 65 cubic metres every six month. the latest statement showed a leap up to 220 for 6 months! I checked the meter and found a further 36 cubic metres had been 'used' in one week. There have been no signs of anything leaking so I've reported a possible leak to the water company and was told that they would be in touch and check the meter or locate the leak. How long would they usually take?

I would have thought they would flow test the supply first to see which side the possible leak is on..Theirs or yours as that will make the difference.
Your then you need to get someone in to sort it out but if it is theirs then they will fix it.
As the leak is not on the mains then there is a good chance you will be bottom of the list as they will need to deal with properties without supplies and major bursts first.
But it does kinda depend on who you called ? Did you call the normal customer service number ? As they would have to pass the request over and that will take time anywayThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

Depends on how busy they are , could be a week could be three or four
Have you turned off the internal stop tap and had a look at the meter if its still moving then there is a leak on your side of the meter , if the leak is on the water company's side it does not affect the meter at all0 -
surely there are standards of service for leak related visits and i would think with the papers on the backs of most water companies three to four weeks would be an outrageneed to have a lightbulb moment0

There is a standard of service but it very much depends on the leak and where it is.
If the meter is in the road then they might have already visited and found that the leak was on the private supply and thus not the responsiblitly of the water company.
Also 3 to 4 weeks is not much really when they have mains leaks to deal with etc
Also as the op did not know it was a leak and only reported that it might be then it would indeed go to the back of the queue as if the customer is not sure there is even a leak where would they start looking ?
If I was the op I would call back and see what is going on but I would also flow test the supply myself and that should confirm if there is a leak or not and can be done quickly .There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

No but I do work for a company that works with water companies and do work with their systems on a daily basis.
I also have to work within OFWAT guidelines to some extent so am aware of the water act etcThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
