I have had the same thing happen to my 17" monitor today. It is very annoying, but I have been setting up a new user account and it's working fine but on the old user account it's wide. My setting is 1024 x 768 cos Yahoo Mail Beta demands it.0

Hi guys
It is a Philips 170B (model 170b6cs/05).
When I turned it on, is default was as per #3.

Try setting screen resolution to 1280x1024, DPI to 120dpi,
and switch on font smoothing using ClearType.Stompa0 -
Thanks Stompa.
I have found the res 1024 x 768 with 120dpi pretty reasonable, but what is 'font smoothing using clear type'?

You should not be using 1024 x 768 on this monitor. This page states that the Recommended resolution is 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz.
TFT monitor only work correctly when set to their native resolution.

I agree the main thing is to set the monitor to its native resolution, then get used to it. Everything will be (slightly) smaller, but it should be way, way more crisp.0

I have a 17 inch TFT as my secondary monitor and it runs just fine @ 1024x768. Its native is 1280x1024 but like the OP I find everything just a little too small at that res
Try different advanced settings (where you got to the size setting but chose the Appearance tab then click effects) Where you get the drop down for 'Use the following method to smooth.........' change it. After applying, see if that has improved things. Each monitor seems to be affected differently by this setting.
It that doesn't do it, you could always use the 1280x1024 but use large icons and a bigger font size

Espresso - What do you mean "will only work correctly when set to native"? Then why was it's setting as 800x600, when it was first turned on? If the native setting is as you say, then surely it should have the default as that.
Garcia - Slightly smaller is an understatement!
Thank's all for your thoughts / suggestions / recomendations, but, honestly 1280x1024 really is too small, and there is nothing wrong with my eyesight. I think I will stick to the 1024x768 untill I find a better setting.
