Hello. This is my first post on this board.

I wonder if anyone can help . . .

I am looking into a job that will require me to have a C1 catagory on my licence. Because I only passed my test last year I dont have this as a standard like some people :o

Do I need to send my licence off and get it added provisionally (free?) and then look into lessons and another test

Also does anyone know anywhere in the Manchester area that might do these lessons and tests ???

I knew I should have taken my test earlier !!! :)

Thank you in advance

You may as well go for your class C as when I did mine was the same price for the training.

This will let you drive all rigid HGV's (no trailers) over 7.5t.

Having your class C as opposed to only class C1 will may give you a better job opportunity.

    Good luck.

    Ah ok thank you

Do I just send off my licence to the DVLA and they will add class C provisionally and then I can book lessons ??

    Thank you again.

How much thought have you given this?
There is a lot more to it now. It is nearly easier getting to the moon than getting a licence to work.
You really need, if not already done so, to start with:
    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022547
You will need a Medical BEFORE you apply for the provisional (almost certain of this)
Then you need to take the test (lessons + test around (£1000)
    then the CPC
You will have to pass an initial Driver CPC qualification before being able to drive professionally. It can be taken at the same time as the vocational driving test.
AND then you will need a Digital Tacho (£18)

Hmmm - ok. Will look in to this again.

I have just had a look on Google and it does look like I need the medical and the provisional on my licence for the interview and also just the C1 catagory.

For the record this is for being a paramedic.

I have also noticed there are a few places that do the specific training for the Ambulance driving but for now I think I just need the C1 provisional and the medical in place.

Thank you all so much for your help - I am going to go and have another read.

Ok - this is clearer (from the careers advice gov page)

Whichever route you choose you will need to meet some basic conditions, including:
    • excellent driving skills and a thorough knowledge of the highway code
    • good fitness levels and good eyesight (prescription glasses are acceptable).
You will also need a C1 category driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points. You may be accepted with a provisional C1 licence, but you will need a full licence before you start working. Some ambulance services may support you through this extra driving qualification, however, this is not standard practice. You must be at least age 18 to apply for a C1 licence.
You will also need CRB clearance.

So a good start is to get the medical and then get the C1 added to my licence provisionally ??

Once I have done this I can either look into taking the test/lessons/etc or see if this is something they will put me through.

the idea is that I have all their requirments in place before I apply for their interview as this is something I really want to do. I want all my proof of qualifications, licence, fitness upto scratch before I apply.

Hope this makes things more understandable - I don't want to be driving a whacking great oil tanker !! Just a 7.5t !! Although I will admit being addicted to Ice Road Truckers and fancy giving that a go :D

    Thank you all so much

Please I am sure you can go straight for your class C, look into this as it is about the same costs.

    Cheers, Wayne.
