Do you often get your cabin bag weighed and checked with Ryanair? I am flying out from Dinard and on the non-UK side they rarely care, but I will be coming back from East Midlands. When I fly from Dinard I will be coming from my work in France to a friend's wedding back home and I don't know if we will have any scales at all there to check my 10kg, like I will be able to at my parents' house!

Best to assume the worst case - I have had hand luggage weighed at times but not others, even at the same airport.

Ok thank you, I guess it often just depends but am I right in assuming it is made far less likely by the new online check-in rules? (Will be my first time under this system)

No - Even if you check in on-line they might be waiting to catch you at the departure gate. There are usually size checks at the gate and I have even seen scales being used there to catch the unwary. Is it worth the gamble and potential double the fee?

Thank you, I appreciate the advice! I'm not surprised they try to catch people out, Ryanair not really being known for their generous spirit. I think I will have to fill my bag with some bags of sugar up to 10kg so I can recognise when it is getting too full! I have no conception of how heavy it is at all.

Also remember when you get to the airport go to an unused check-in counter and check the weight. This'll give you a chance to move things around (put in your pockets or down your socks or something) without the pressure of somebody standing over you.
  • The way the airline weight allowance is I would favour the idea which I know many have said before, a complete weight including person.....
I've certainly been around and seen some monsters and midgets at check-in who have the same baggage allowance?? I know for a fact more fuel is needed to move Two Ton Joe than Midget Mary!
And no I'm not a midget arguing for more baggage, 6:3 at 95kg.

A relevant point to this thread; The few occasions I've been on a Ryanair it's been with kilt and bagpipes. The complete uniform and pipes weigh about 26kg, add to this extra clothes and toothbrush the 15kg and 10kg free allowance (it was still free to check in bags when I last flew with them) is not enough.
In order to avoid paying for excess we would sneak the heavy things on as hand baggage, I saw my carry on bag reach 24kg plus physically wearing kilts/jackets when check in wanted money!

Yes I know Scots have a reputation for being tight with money. It's not true we are just very careful!

Ooh good one! I will be fretting about it either way, thanks to your help at least I know I will be fretting for a reason instead of needlessly ;)
I really hope I won't need that much, but I am coming home for a wedding and have no idea about what I'm going to wear!
  • I have just bought a wheeled cabin bag whose size label indicated that it was within BAA (D.O.T) limits.

    The D.O.T. size limit is 56cmx45cmx25cm - Sum of sides = 136cm

My case measures 57cmx38cmx23cm - Sum of sides = 118cm
So it meets all requirements except for the bag height 57cm and this dimension is totally incompressible to become 56cm .

To make things worse, I had planned to travel with Singapore Airlines and their cabin bag requirements are 55cmx16cmx20cm and a Sum of sides + 115cm.

At 70 years old and travelling to Australia on my own with an additional wheeled checked luggage case of 20 kgs, I don't feel keen on removing the wheels as I think carrying the bag any distance would kill me.

Could anyone tell me if there is any flexibility in the size check as I am not trying to take more than the correct amount of luggage, but I would hate to arrive at the checking in desk and have the cabin bag rejected for the sake of an inadvertent couple of centimetres: (not even an inch)!
    Thank you

I took a wheeled case on a Ryanair flight at end of Oct 09 with no probs, in fact more people did than didn't have this as their hand luggage.

For Xmas I was given a baggage weight checker, haven't used it yet but think it hooks on to your bag and tells tyou the weight- this may be a good investment for peace of mind!
Yesterday is today's memories, tomorrow is today's dreams :)
