Went to Spain, last minute holiday and used our phones over there to call friends/family mobiles/landlines UK/Spain, too busy enjoying weeks holiday, didnt realise we could get stung for as much. Now been hit with rediculous bills Vodaphone £200 and o2 £100. Phoned them to complain, but no joy.

Any advice.

Pay up I'm afraid or they will put the debt collectors onto you! You did make the calls and they have been billed by the foreign network.

For making calls from Spain, prepaid phone cards and payphones are by far the best option.

I used them in Tenerife, one shop was selling them for €6, €0.10 a minute to the UK :D. (These were "ORBITEL" cards)
  • Hi,

If you have Vodafone Passport on your account you'd still need to be registered on Vodafone's network (or partner network) while in Spain. In this case you would have been Vodafone Spain (Airtel) to take advantage of Vodafone Passport. There are two other networks in Spain, Amena and Telefonica (Movistar). The latter two are non-Vodafone, therefore, the Vodafone Passport 75p connection fee charge and domestic rate thereafter wouldn't apply to your bill.

Sometimes while overseas your mobile number may also roam from one network to the other dependant on whether or not you go out of an area of coverage. When this happens your phone can automatically connect to the next available network and charges can occur. I'd recommend contacting Vodafone before you go overseas and obtaining a copy of how to do a 'manual roam' for your particular handset.

That way, should you ever be in any doubt that you're not on the correct network, you can always roam back onto it through your handset settings.

It will be in phone settings, network selection, and once selected to manual will not change to another network

The cheapest mobile way to call from Spain is with a Vodafone Spain SIM on the 60 for 1 minutes option, and use a calling card with local access. Then any landline call up to an hour will cost under 30p connect plus about 2c per minute. Or use a callback service from a landline for a couple of pence a minute. Or use Vodafone Passport and make calls offpeak for 5p/minute plus the connect fee.
