Water bill...any idea how much it will be????

Hi all,

We moved into a small rented one bed flat in SW London in March. I called the water company to ask when we would receive a water bill and how much it was likely to be. All they said was that we would get issued the bill in September..every 6 months.

We have been putting away £50 a month for about 3 months for it, but have no idea how much it is likely to be at all.

We have a bath every day and then just what we use to wash the dishes and clean our teeth.

Its with Thames Water and ive heard they have been having problems, but does anyone know roughly what we might be paying?

Thanks

  • Hi Sarahpuggy - are you on a water meter? I'm with United Utilities but £50 sounds like it should cover your bill and give you some return. I live in a 3 bed semi-detached with my partner and our direct debits have been set at £26 a month - we recently moved out of a rented 2 bed terrace where we paid a fixed amount of only £16 a month to United Utilities!

We are on a water meter now which I think works out at slightly less than £2.50 a unit (equivalent to a cubic meter, I think). I think our water consumption will be just under £26 a month but I haven't checked the water meter for a while! Is there any way you can read your meter and calculate approximately how many units you are using each month as that could be a good guide?

If your flat has a meter you should have read it when you moved in.

If it is an old Flat(pre 1989) bills could be based on the old Rateable Value if it doesn't have a meter. Or it could simply have an assessed bill.

Either way do not accept Thames Water telling you to wait 6 months. Write to them and demand to know now how your water bill is assessed. They must respond.

As a rough guess for 2 people(if metered) and a small flat(if not metered) your bill shouldn't be more than £30 a month.

    Hi, Thankyou for your replies..

Well we live in a big Georgian style old house that has been divided up into flats, so we actually dont even know where the meters are in the whole house! They certainly aren't in our flat anyway. The agency we let it from took gas and electric meter readings when we moved in..

I shall investigate a little more and see what i can find. Thanks again.
  • Hi well i live in a two bed flat with my g.f and our water bill for 6 months is £106. (with meter and is severn trent water)

so putting 50 away a month will cover it with plenty left over

I'm with Thames Water and for a large 2-bed place (with two people) I pay them £15 a month on Direct Debit.

i'm with United Utilities in a 3 bedroomed place. In the last year i've had a lodger and then he moved out and my girlfriend has moved in for a bit. So at least 1 shower a day, teeth washing, dish cleaning, washing machine, and the usual water usage has been around £115 for the last 2 6 month periods.
