Hi all, not sure if this is the right board or if I should post on a shopping board.....
I would like to buy some usb memory sticks & need some suggestions of cheap, reputable places to buy. I'm not very techie minded at all so don't know where to start. I'm not really sure how much memory I need on them but not too much I don't think. I am going to use them for storing photos (I have already backed up my pictures on to CDs but was advised to save them all twice onto different formats) probably up to 500 pics on each one. So probably 1-4gb each? Any suggestions gratefully received, I need at least alf a dozen & more if I can afford them.
Cheers, Liz

I keep my photos backed up in two places.. my laptops HD and a portable 250gb HD.. With the likelyhood of both failing being quite low (and I have about 50gb of photos)
Avoid memory sticks from ebay. Personally I get things like this from play.com or mymemory.com, but there's also sites like 7dayshop.com. They give discounts on bulk purchases, which would be good if you're buying a dozen.
E.g. 6 x 4gb @ £6.59 = £39.54
or .12 x 2gb @ £4.99 = £59.88
2gb - http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=108106
4gb - http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=108107
However...
250gb Western digital 2.5" HD £44.99 - http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/11841119/Western-Digital-My-Passport-Essential-Portable-250GB-USB-2-0-2-5-External-Hard-Drive-Black/Product.html0 -

USB flash drives are fine for data transfer. They are not a safe or reliable way of archiving data long term. Get an external USB hard drive. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

USB hard drives fail too. Best archive practice is to have at least 2 backups. One on DVD or CD plus a copy on hard disk.qui tacet consentire -

Houses can flood/burn-down. Best archive practice is to have at least 3 backups. USB hard-drive and DVD copies at your place, and another set of DVDs kept with a friend or relative.0

I wouldn't go that far myself & would only have 1x set of DVDs, but I would keep the USB hard-drive and the DVDs separate as suggestedChris Elvin0 -
Earthquakes can happen. Best practice is to have at least 5 backups. a USB hard drive, a DVD copy at your place, another set at a friends house, another set at an overseas relatives place, and uploaded to an online storage area.
Wrap them all in tinfoil to protect them from the rays!!!0 -
