A useful thread on this updated card is on the Bankruptcy thread too, I too received the letter about updating the cashcard, bit have not used the account for many years.

The letter she got implies that it's not an upgrade but a change to all cashcard account holders. Good news for most account holders that couldn't get much more than a basic account , not so good news for cheapskate well off people who like to pennypinch while on expensive holidays.

why does a holiday abroad have to be expensive?

Am I correct in thinking, the account I use (yes I am a cheapskate, I just use my account whilst overseas) which is a FlexAccount but with the Purple cashcard be unaffected?

I opened the account when there was no requirement to transfer any direct debits, standing orders or salary etc...

    Cheers

If you have a flexaccount you will be unaffected, but it sounds like you have a cashcard so may well be upgraded to the cashcard plus. When Nationwide announced it was passing on the 1% VISA charge for transactions outside Europe (roughly speaking) it also stated that the cashcard accounts would be changed so they would not be a better option for spending abroad than the Flexaccount with a VISA debit card. I guess this is their way of carrying out this, although, as with faster payments, they've been taking their time about things. If you are affected brc you could try applying for a flexaccount alongside a Nationwide savings account which requires a flexaccount. That way you are not obliged to run the flexaccount with direct debits, standing orders or salary etc.

Yes I currently have a flexaccount but with a purple cashcard. I would be fine if they upgraded my Flexaccount to have a Visa debit card (not a cashcard + as these seem to be just for their basic account not flexaccount) and I am fine with them passing on the 1% VISA charge as this charge does not apply to the countries which I regularly visit.

I will however have to try opening a savings account as you mentioned as if they do upgrade me to a Cashcard + to use with my FlexAccount this card offers no international withdrawals.

On the other hand, I would probably not be eligible for a Visa card upgrade on my Flexaccount anyway as I seem to meet their criteria (I was under 18 at time of opening the account so did not meet their criteria)

    Thanks for your reply

i'm getting slighlt confused with the difference between a flex acount and a cash card account. I hold a basic flex account (purple card with cash card written on top right hand of card) with no debit facilities and have received the same letter. I'm probably wrong but from what i can see flex account is the name of the account and cash card and cash card+ are sub categories under this.
The letter states that these are important changes to your cash card.

The FlexAccount is Nationwide's current account.

With this account, they will choose whether to issue with

    (a) A cashcard (soon to be 'Cashcard+'). This is (currently) purple.
    or,
    (b) A Visa debit card. This is blue.

It's the cashcard that is changing.

However, the website implies that it is only selected cashcard customers that will see a change - as the title says "Replacement of cash card with cash card+ for customers in receipt of letter CC01".

So to put it simply, if you have not received 'letter CC01', then you will not be affected.

Sounds like it - Savings account cards will be changed aswel:-

Are you going to replace all of my cards?
If you hold any savings accounts that have card facilities, these cards will be replaced between June and October 2010.
