account hacked i think

Hi, i never use my ebay account. I think it has been hacked. I use a friends PC to access the internet, as i do not have internet at my home. Anyway, i looked at my emails and i have got one horrible one that is asking where this item is. This person said that i have not sent him his items and he had paid nearly £200 via paypal about 2 weeks ago. I have not used ebay for the last 6 - 8 months.

What can i do? I do not even remember the log in details to the ebay account. I do not want to get in trouble for this.

Am i liable for this? I did go to the police but they told me there is nothing they can do as it is not exactly something they can deal with as it is online.

thankyou

If you did not read the message having signed into EBay then delete it and dont worry. Loads of spoof emails of similar nature going around at the moment.

DO NOT click on any links in emails addressed to you purporting to be from ebay or paypal.

Much more likely to be a scam than anything else. Do you use paypal at all? Do you know your paypal login & password? If so, open a new page, type in paypal's address, go look at your account, see if you can see his payment (you won't because there won't have been one). Did 'this person's' email have a link to the product you'd supposedly sold him? Is that product actually listed as being sold by you?

In all honesty, you'd be better off ignoring it & deleting the email. What ever you decide to do, DO NOT click on any link in the email. If you really feel you need to do something about it, type the address into a new window and look at it that way, or right-click on the link and see what the address it goes back to really is.

    Regards

. Dear oh dear. You really should have, or should've listened at school when that nice English teacher was explaining how words get abbreviated.
  • Hi, thankyou for the responces. The email was very short, it had no links, just a couple of lines of text - which said that he wanted his item and that i had sold it to him 2 weeks previous.

I do not remember my ebay login or my password because i never use it. I used it twice to buy a phone and blank DVD cases and i used it once to sell an old mobile but that was ages ago. I shipped out the phone and i know i got possitive feedback on that.

There is a Re: Message from eBay Member Regarding Item in the subject. the item number comes back with

This listing has been removed or is no longer available. Please make sure you entered the right item number.

So i really do not know what it was that was sold or what the account details were.

Should i just delete it and forget about it? i do not wish to get in to trouble, and i do not want ebay to charge me for this as i do not know what was sold in my account.

As you can tell, i am quite worried about this as i do not wish to have the police knocking on my door asking me questions about this. I can understand the person who emailed me's fustration as he has claimed to have spent £200 on this item and has not received it. I know if i had spent £200 i would be the same.

He said he paid with paypal, should i advise him to claim back from paypal and ebay? As i read that they have some kind off buyer protection system on items bought from eBay. I am at a loss here and i do not wish to be £200 out of pocket myself.

Thankyou all for your help and sorry for going on.

Don't worry about it, I had one last week saying that he / she had paid for the goods and not received them, and if I didn't sort it they would get the police involved. They are just trying to get your password.

If you are still worried, forward the mail to Ebay, you can do that through the Ebay site map and search for the section about spoof mails.

If it is in your private email address just delete it and any further ones. I do it all the time no problem.

Hi, i never use my ebay account.

If the message reads something along the lines of,

"Hey where is my item, I paid two weeks ago you haven't sent it. I'm going to report you to ebay and the police."

The agressive tone is usually the give away, trying to scare you into responding before you've had time to think it through and spot any mistakes.

    Here's one I received recently,

    Dear eBay member,

It's been 3 weeks since you won my auction and you haven't sent the payment yet. I will report you to the police and to eBay right away. You will receive a non paying bidder report and your eBay account will be suspended imediately. You are a bad person and you deserve this. Bye bye.

It's not real, there is no person £200 down, nothing has been sold on your ebay account.

Forward to spoof@ebay.co.uk and then delete, or just delete it; either way forget about it.
  • Hi all, the email was quite abusive.

It is now Friday, and WE STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE ITEM!!!!! This is now 6 working days.

they went on to ask for my phone number and how it was delivered.

I have deleted the email, and i hope this is the end of it. Have to say though, how would he know my email address? i never give it out to anybody and the only people who knew it were 2 of my close friends who have said they have not gave it out and ebay - as i know i could not use an hotmail address with them. I use my hotmail address to apply for online items as it is full of spam anyway but the other email address, has no spam.

thankyou for putting my mind at rest though. i would hate for the police to be knocking on my door asking me for the money or the item.:o
