Thanks Marie, I will look on book direct. Not sure about the travel lodge as travelling there by train and will not have a car while there. I did get some information from the Tourist Office but hard to know what the B & B's are really like so if any one has stayed in one down there & could recommend it that would be great.
  • portsmouth transport is very good, and often too,and if you do stay for more than a day and want to travel the 700bus travels from southsea to brighton(but its a long trip from 1 end to th other 3 and half hrs ,but its nice you can jump on and off all day,and look out for combined bus tickets with days out to places of intrest, including the isle of white...just plan in advanced(the chip shop opp the tourist info next to the docks are very nice!)good luck

There is a Holiday Inn Express at Gunwharf Quays, this is a 5 minute walk from Portsmouth Harbour station. Might be able to get some good rates through THISlink, 2 for1 or Family friends rates.

The Premier Inn at Southsea is right on the front, next to the small Fun Fair and another Holiday Inn is about 400 yards back from there. Portsmouth/Southsea is quite a compact City, so getting around is not that difficult, although I think the buses are quite expensive, although the 1/several day tickets seem better value than single tickets.

I am attending a function in Southsea & the hotel is quite expensive, have to stay there for the function but was thinking of staying on in Southsea for a bit longer to make a week of it if I can get some where else to stay for the other days. B & B would be fine. Travel lodge not too bad but wondering if anything a bit nearer (Historic dockyard area).
Thanks to everyone who has offered advise so far, very much appreciated

what about the new etap hotel it's close to the football stadium so not close to the historic ships but could get a bus or train easily from there. Rooms start from about the £35 mark. There are couple of places close to the historic ships but more expensive than the travelodge. The keppels head and the Royal sailors home club have not stayed there so not sure what they are like. There is a b&b called the Lady hamilton again not sure what it is like.
