Several of these fun books published by New Scientist. You can view some of this stuff on their website for nothing, too.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I knew you would, it all mkes sense, that weirdly colourful map
Urgh, I'm so TIRED. cat had me up through the night, the weather is draining. I'm off for a trip next week...business not pleasure...and feel daunted by the 4:30am taxi.....weirdly when I wouldn't begrudge it for a critter, haven't all week.0 -
My wife has started work in a hospital. They have some very odd signs there:
'This room is alarmed' - so my wife wants to calm it down.
'Disabled toilet' - why doesn't someone fix it?
They have a drawer marked 'Stationary' - but it moves perfectly well.
There's also a 'Discharge Lounge' - what colour discharge is that?
Are we the only ones who are bemused by this?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I was feeling a bit grumpy with mse earlier. I ran in to grumpy people a few times recently, but Davesnave and I also ''hang out'' with other smallholders/would be small holders in Greenfingered and one of them just offered me not only some carpet to replace what the feral has made stink to high heaven, but also underlay. I just can't believe how lovely people can be.
This morning I felt pretty wretched: I'll take feral horses any day over feral cats! and the smell it just frightful and I was resigned to a winter of a floor covered with newspaper under vet beds (this glamorous life!). I feel a little overwhelmed, and certainly undeserving!0 -
Friday evenings were traditionally let your hair night down on MSE. I remember a time when you could login and expect a discussion on the economy to be fraught with innuendo.
What happened?

In lostinrates case, and mine, properties were purchased, which take us rather more effort to maintain/improve than the average semi.
Most nights, I'm too knackered to stay conscious, let alone think up nudge-nudge jokes. If I get here at all, it's often way after the rest of you have gone to bed, but I still appreciate the chat, in a vicarious way.
On the subject of carpet, we tried a Rug Doctor & various fresheners on ours in the hallway here, but in the end, we stuck it outside and suppressed weeds with it. They had a labrador, and there's nothing worse.....:(
On the economy, we're on the alternative one down here....0 -
I've got my flood searches back. It says it's totally fine for river flooding (and miles from the sea) so gets a "Negligible" rating from the Environment Agency. It also gets a "Negligible" rating for rainwater flooding. However, it gets "Moderately high" for groundwater flooding. It says "Groundwater flooding is defined as the emergence of groundwater at the ground surface or the rising of groundwater into man-made ground under conditions where the normal range of groundwater levels is exceeded." However, when I try to google groundwater flooding, it seems to think it's mainly a problem in the chalk regions of the South coast and SE. The BGS groundwater flood risk map doesn't even cover my county at all.
What is this all about? I've never heard of groundwater flooding before. Is it something I need to worry about?
ETA I've now found the county council's flood defence strategy document. (Isn't the internet a wonderful thing?) It says the county is mostly limestone and therefore at risk from groundwater flooding, although this is not well understood and can't be predicted very accurately. It then goes on to consider each borough or district separately. The statement for my town just says "There are no records of groundwater flooding in the borough."
So I am guessing the only reason the flood search has come back "moderately high" for groundwater flooding is because the whole town is built on limestone at the foot of some hills. I don't think I need to worry about that. Just got to see if I can find some insurers who see it that way.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0
