After I was 8 or 9 we became poor, but we ate well. For a time, my parents owned a fish shop, so we used to eat fish that would otherwise be thrown away. The rest went to a local piggery, so we'd have pork too.
In spring, the local gentry would arrive with their freshly-caught salmon, so that Dad could prepare it for them. Payment was always in kind. My parents were not able to sell all of the salmon acquired in this way, so we had rather a lot to consume at home. Salmon burgers, fried salmon, poached salmon, salmon risotto........:(
I'm still not terribly fond of salmon.0 -
@ viva I was hoping McLaren would do better but it's close enough and i can see a few incidents happening.
I'm rooting for Alonso for the title as he has had the worst of the luck over the season and in contention.0 -
After my dad had his accident, we were poor. There was no spare cash going at all, all our clothes were from a jumble sale, all our food, the cheap offcuts from the butchers.
My parents owned their home but that was about it...times were extremely tough.
I think all the above explains why I get so depressed and stressed when my freezer is being emptied (usually for defrosting), I may have had money in my bank but the mere fact the freezer was empty sent me into a major depressive mood. It's the same for jumble sales or very busy places, it sends me right back to being 3 or 4 years old and being barged at by old ladies desperate to get to the stalls first and sets off a panic attack where I can actually smell the cheap perfume they used to wear.
It also explains why I was able to adapt better to less money when my marriage fell apart....I knew the tricks to make food last longer, the cuts of meat that were cheaper, the budgeting on a limited income.
It was only really for a few years until dad got his compensation and then an office job, but the memory sticks in my head.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

I'm rooting for Alonso because he's Ferrari and Webber because he's an Aussie and would be first time world champ.
Really liked the circuit though. It has a lovely rhythm to it.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Forza Ferrari! I am feeling a bit sorry for Vettel though. Makes both of the last two races very interesting! Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I remember when I was about 6 being taken out to stand in a huge queue of people for hours one night ... we were queueing for second hand sheets because a laundry was having a sell off of old stock. It was the sort of laundry that would supply hotels/similar, the sheets had their initials stamped in the corners. They'd supply hotels etc with clean sheets and take away the dirty ones for washing. The sheets would get to a stage where they were replaced and the old ones sold off.
We felt privileged that we'd found out about it, that we could get to it - and that we managed to get a couple of big packs of sheets, doubles and singles.
I think we've still got some of those sheets here today.0 -
It's amazing how much times have changed since we were kids Pastures. I grew up in a different country and poor. I didn't realise as a child that the reason my Mum was so thin (5 and 1/2 stones) was because she was saving the food for my brother and me and living off what could be grown in the garden. We were seriously, seriously poor. Yet still, we lived in a house and had running water and a toilet, albeit an outside one. We weren't at risk from Malaria etc, we got to go to school, if we were ill there was a doctor we could go to. I still can't believe that my circumstances have changed for the better so much, yet the majority of the world still lives in conditions far worse than those I grew up in.
It makes me very angry when people - not around these parts I hasten to add - gob off about not being able to afford the latest trainers or mobile phones. Although I'm not a mother my own upbringing makes me painfully aware of what Sue feels about the freezer. I don't talk about it much because my Mum got so ill she almost died, but I totally get this bit of the conversation, even if I do try and change it and talk about glib stuff like F1 because its a bit painful. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I was quite happy for Vettel to not make it to the end.
It was an entertaining race which is setting things up nicely :T0 -

I missed the end of the Grand Prix. I recorded it on SKY and was watching it behind the live feed. Unfortunately, by the time they announced it was to move to BBC2 it was no-longer possible to record it.
Waiting patiently for iplayer. :whistle:0
